Hysterical Historical

Thursday, Sept. 14, at McCoy Studio Theater, MACC

September 07, 2006
[COMEDY] Anyone working in the tourism industry (or living in West Maui) knows this universal truth: tourists are strange and often hilarious creatures. On Thursday, Sept. 14, Charles Phoenix will be presenting irrefutable evidence to back my claim. Phoenix, a cultural historian/stand-up comedian/dude with maybe the coolest sounding name I've ever heard, has conceived a faux-retro living room slide show from vintage family photographs of generations past. Like a sweetly deranged grandmother, Phoenix has been captivating audiences with his hysterical observations of the traveling American family. From their choices of "fashion" to their often podunk destinations, Phoenix reconstructs and re-imagines life on the road with the original Griswalds. Even those that don't spend their workdays slinging burgers or humping luggage will appreciate the history and humor of Phoenix's presentation. But I'm guessing it'll be especially funny for anyone who's ever given directions to "La-Hay-Na" to a man wearing black socks and sandals with an aloha shirt. For a dollar. I'd better be careful here. Like a rowdy businessman watching Girls Gone Wild with his associates, I'd hate to discover any of my family members in one of the slides. Because Lord knows we've all provided plenty of material for Phoenix to skewer. A portion of the proceeds will be given to the Maui AIDS foundation. For more info, visit NeoComedy.com or Godblessamericana.com. Tickets: $18, call 242-7469. [COREY NIELSEN]
