October 19, 2006 [MOVIES!] Now in its 26th year, the Hawai`i International Film
Festival brings a dozen movies from Hawai`i and the Pacific to Maui
that wouldn't ordinarily reach our shores, much less our megaplexes.
This year's lineup includes The Shimmering, which deals with Hawaiian mythology and was partially filmed on Maui; Samoan Wedding, a comedy about four Samoan bachelors who have to be nice at a wedding; King and the Clown, about two South Korean jesters in the Chosun Dynasty who have to make their king laugh or get the axe; and Winds of God Kamikaze,
a comedy about two New York comedians who get sent back in time to a
Japanese suicide pilots' school in World War II. There are also films
about Vietnamese boat people, big wave surfer Sarah Gerhardt and the
2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. For a complete schedule of films and
showtimes, visit www.hiff.org or call 579-8081. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
