I could hardly contain my anticipation. The Maui County Liquor Commission was going to to another public hearing on a possible change to the liquor rules!
Of course, the Nov. 8, 2006 commission agenda wasn't exactly very clear: "Proposed amendments to the Rules of theLiquor Commission, County of Maui, relating to Title MC-08, Department of Liquor Control, Subtitle 01, Liquor Commission, Chapter 101, Rules Governing the Manufacture and Sale of Intoxicating Liquor of the County of Maui."
I stared at the agenda before the hearing. All that gibberish had to add up to something good. Were they going to loosen up the regulations governing spirits distilleries? Legalize the peddling of booze by distributors? Even liberalize the rule that all nightclub dancing has to occur in a specially marked zone of dancing?
"This is basically housekeeping,"LC director Franklyn Silva told the commissioners, who didn't seem as excited as I was. Silva then explained that in the department's zeal to change the law requiring that all licensees card all customers, they "inadvertantly" left out the stipulation that establishments could still check "drivers licenses" to establish age of majority.
Oh.
The commission approved it immediately. Then commission chairman Manuel Moniz, Jr. asked Silva how the new law was going.
He said the department was happy to see that some of the establishments were still checking every customer's ID.
"No old ladies complaining?" Moniz asked.
"Idon't get calls at night anymore,"Silva said.
Then commissioner Ron McOmber said that last night a Safeway checker had said the new rule really took off the pressure. "She said, 'Someone like you I don't check,'" he said. "I said, 'Wait a minute?!'"
"Don't worry,"a fellow commissioner said. "You're still young and handsome."
"Handsome is the key,"McOmber said.
