[WOODWORK/ARTS] My friend Dylan will never let me get away with saying this, but I will anyway: I love wood. Have for years. I love its smell. It transports me back to days being raised by a building superintendent/ carpentry hobbyist father. I love the various tones and textures of different woods (my koa Fender Stratocaster is so beautiful that it's tough to justify hacking away on it). I love wood's functionality. The fact that humans have figured out how to build just about anything from a fallen tree amazes me. Having zero mechanical inclination only adds to my wonder and respect for competent woodworkers. Having said that, I'm looking forward to the Hui No'eau's annual Maui Woodworkers' Guild exhibition (runs through Jan. 14) and faire. The Hui is on a stunning 10-acre estate and is considered one of the top art centers in Hawai`i. This weekend, they'll be featuring master carpentry works, as well as offering keiki activities and demos in various artistic mediums, and offering many of these crafts for sale, including haku-style wreaths and garlands. There is no cost to attend. Among the woodworks displayed will be fine art furniture, sculptures and vessels. Ah, vessels. Finally, something Dylan can get excited about!
