WHO RECEIVED: Maui County Mayor-elect Charmaine Tavares

Normally contributions as small as $200 wouldn't even appear in this
space, but considering Tavares' comments in the Nov. 29, 2006 Maui News
about the proposed privately owned and operated Malulani Hospital—and
Jencks' well-established stature as one of Maui's premier land
developers—I couldn't resist. "I think Malulani Medical Center would be
a good thing for Maui," she said in the paper. And many people—though
not state health officials, who nixed the idea back in October—agree. I
know Charlie Jencks agrees, because corporate filings for Malulani
Health Systems—the local company that will control 20 percent of the
proposed hospitals equity (Plano, Texas-based Triad Hospitals, Inc.
would hold the rest)—show him as a member of the board of directors. Of
course, whether Jencks' paltry $200 check to Tavares (he's given a lot
more to others) has anything to do with Malulani is difficult to say.
His mammoth controversial Wailea 670 project hasn't exactly been built
yet, and Jencks' bio at the Malulani website lists a host of reasons
why he might want to help someone become Maui County Mayor: "President,
Maui Contractor's Association; past Director Maui Public Works; Seabury
Hall Board Director; Maui County BSA Council Board & Past
President; Board Maui Chamber of Commerce."
