Picks of the Week
First Light
Wednesday (Dec. 13), at the Castle Theater

December 07, 2006 [FILM FEST] One of my favorite parts of the holiday season is the First Light Film Festival. The movies featured at First Light are the cream of the crop for mainstream cinema. This is the nominated group of movies competing for the coveted Oscar Awards. The idea of seeing mainstream films doesn't necessarily motivate me to the movies. What does is seeing a film at the Castle Theater. On numerous occasions I've seen movies there that have made a lasting impression. Most of the time these are movies that I wouldn't get to see at the other venues on the island, films like Waking Life, The Red Violin, and What the Bleep? Even what I would call a "so-so" movie becomes a little better because of the grand atmosphere of this venue. So what if you can't eat popcorn and swill down a Coke inside the theater? Better yet, there's a bar right outside. The bar is part of the Candlelight Cafe, where you'll also find delicious food and even better desserts. First Light Film Festival runs Dec. 13 through Jan. 1. See film times and descriptions on p. 27. For more info, visit www.mauifilmfestival.com. [KEITH BENEDICT]
