December 28, 2006 [SLAM POETRY] Slam Master D is hosting MauiSlam, Maui's only spoken word competition. Slam poetry contests are gaining popularity across the nation. In a typical slam, participants are judged by selected audience members, and/or the general audience. Poets are scored on the content of their work and also how well they perform the piece. Needless to say, a contestant will do a lot better if they can work a crowd. What makes this art form competition even more challenging is that the poets can't use props or instruments. A $100 cash prize will be given to the winner of this MauiSlam. Those under 21 are welcome also, as long as they're with a parent and ordering food. The sign up starts at 6:30 p.m. and the contest begins at 7. A DJ will be spinning before the show, and throughout the evening. Call Slam Master D at 244-9091 for more info. Cover: $5. [KB]
