Run for the Whales

Saturday (Feb. 10), 6 a.m. at the Polo Beach parking lot in Wailea

February 08, 2007
[FUNDRAISER] It's Whale Season, and we all know what that means: time for another leg-stretching, heart-racing fundraiser. There's the half marathon, 5K run, 2K walking course or 2K "fun run" for the kids. Racers will compete for medals, leis and free whale-watch passes, and every entrant will get a t-shirt, continental breakfast and a nice steaming bowl of exhaustion. According to a Pacific Whale Foundation press release, the Run benefits "the marine science education programs offered by Pacific Whale Foundation for Maui schoolchildren" which "take place in the classroom/science labs at Pacific Whale Foundation's Discovery Center and in the field." These programs include "water testing programs, eco-friendly tidepool explorations, whale watches and career mentoring programs." And that is why you must run—for the whales and other sea creatures that cannot run. They can swim pretty fast, but they can't run… yet. To register or get more information, call 249-8811.
