Love, American Dream-Style

Wednesday (Mar. 21), 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Castle Theater

March 15, 2007
[FILM] Themes abound in Sweet Land. The film tells—in English, German and Norwegian, with English subtitles (what, cuz, no pidgin?)—the story of a land heir torn between selling his family's sacred grounds and holding onto the sentimental plot. The movie's told in flashbacks, which can be cool (especially when you're stoned) into the early days of the family tree, when immigrants had to struggle for every shred of dignity they could earn. Focused primarily on Inge, the heir's deceased grandmother (played by the impressive Elizabeth Reaser), the film captures the magic of adventure and the power of love to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. As if the powers of love and the potential of the American Dream weren't enough, Sweet Land is a visual feast offering majestic landscapes of farmland and wide open, country spaces. As Lou Lumenick of the New York Post puts it, the movie is "captivating"—whoa, man, what an understated genius! Tickets: $10. For info visit online at www.mauifilmfestival.com. [COREY NIELSEN]
