[ART] No, "Loteria" is not the Mexican word for "lottery." In fact, the game dates back to the 15th century, where it was used as a kind of fundraiser for the poor. More like Bingo, Loteria is a game of chance, where players use cards to fill out a grid of pictures on a board. The most important thing to get out of this cultural lesson is that the pictures on the cards use iconic Mexican images, like El Gallo (The Rooster), El Diablito (The Little Devil) and El Borracho en El Barril con El Mono (The Drunk in the Barrel with The Monkey). And so Artemio Rodriquez, a prominent Mexican artist who works in linoleum cut printmaking, has been at the Hui No`eau working with students from Baldwin High School to come up with their own vision of the game, inspired by Hawai`i, Maui, contemporary culture and whatever other personal touches they wanna add. And they'll all be at this public reception on Saturday. But you can check out their goods on exhibit after that, everyday at the gallery from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until May 26.
