South Maui's Blowing Up!

Monday (May 14), 6 p.m. at the Kihei Community Center

May 10, 2007
[COMMUNITY FORUM] Lots of building planned for South Maui, people. Just to name two, someday soon Makena Resort will expand like gangbusters and Wailea 670—which could begin construction in just a few months—wants to put 1,400 homes and condo units, a golf course, sewage treatment plant and shopping center in the land between Maui Meadows and Makena. In all, activists estimate as many as 13,200 new housing units could go in. To get a better idea of what all this means in terms of traffic congestion, water usage, affordable housing, Native Hawaiian archaeological preservation and botanical ecology, Maui Tomorrow Foundation and SaveMakena.org are sponsoring this free public forum. The moderator will be former Maui Planning Commissioner Dr. Diane Shepherd. Guests include attorney Isaac Moriwake, Maui Cultural Lands President Ed Lindsay, Native Hawaiian Plant Society President Dr. Lee Altenberg and smart growth developer Zach Franks. As expected, the forum is free. For more information, call 579-9802 or visit www.mauitomorrow.org. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
