Boogie Wonderland

Sunday (May 20), 7 p.m. at A&B Amphitheater

May 17, 2007
[FUNK/R&B] You're a shining star, no matter who are/shining bright to see, what you could truly be!... Earth Wind & Fire is definitely part of the soundtrack to my life. I remember thinking a lot of my mom's music was weird, but some of her grooves that I really got into—before my young sponge of a brain became corrupted with less classic tastes in the '80s—was funk and R&B. For really, what else could I rollerboogie to but "Shining Star," "Let's Groove" and "Boogie Wonderland" (I won't even get into the heartache of its cursed cover in Happy Feet)? Even to this day, every time I hear "Got to Get You Into My Life" or "September" I smile, lip-synch and do the white-girl dance. Clearly, I am not alone in my appreciation, given the beloved '70's soul band's accolades: six Grammys, induction into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, ASCAP's Rhythm & Soul Heritage Award in 2002, BET's Lifetime Achievement Award, and the selling of over 40 million albums in the U.S. in 34 years. This weekend at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, expect to see Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson, and me, singing along with much arhythmic glee to "Ba de ya… say do you remember/Ba de ya… dancing in September/Ba de ya… never was a cloudy daaaay…" Tickets: $25. Visit www.mauiarts.org or call 242-SHOW. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]
