Newt Live and on Stage!

Wednesday (May 30), 6 p.m. at Borders in Kahului

May 24, 2007
[BOOK SIGNING] Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich—a right-wing Republican once in all seriousness observed that women can do office work better than men because "males are biologically driven to go out and hunt giraffes"—is coming to Maui. That this is unquestionably the most ridiculously awesome thing to happen on our island this year—take that, Earth, Wind & Fire!—goes without saying. Ostensibly he's appearing at Borders to push his new book Pearl Harbor, and that's fine. We can forget for the moment that Gingrich has made many, many hints about running for president next year. We can also put out of our minds the fact that in the 1990's he was an astonishingly unpopular House Speaker who transformed Congress from a body focused on working people to one that largely catered to corporate interests. Or that he recently admitted to doing some chick who wasn't his wife at the same time he was spending long hours trying to convince the American people that the House had to impeach President Bill Clinton because he lied about getting a blow job from an intern. This is Newt we're talking about. This is going to be fun. Borders is located in the Maui Marketplace, 270 Dairy Rd., Kahului. For more information call 877-6160. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
