Music Ed: Good for the Kids

Now through July 7, island-wide

June 28, 2007
[ARTS EDUCATION] The Maui Invitational Band Festival is an annual two-week event that was created in 2003 to provide musical and educational support by mainland and international instructors for musicians and vocalists of all ages and skill levels. Headed by Arts Education for Children Group (AECG), this year's lineup features instrumental workshops, vocal clinics and free community concerts of all musical genres. On Saturday (June 30), 6 p.m. at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa in Kaanapali, there's the Blues and Jazz Fest with the Double Barrel Blues Band, Colin John Blues Band, Sheryl Renee and Gene Argel Trio. On Wednesday (July 4) at 6:30 p.m., outside on the Lahaina Library Lawn, the Independence Day "Concert in the Park" features vocalist Sheryl Renee with the Maui Community Band, which includes local musicians with day jobs like doctors, bankers, car salesmen and teachers. And for the finale on Saturday (July 7), 7 p.m. at the Grand Wailea Resort & Spa, The Maui Community Band directed by Lisa Owen with Hilo High School Band, Nassau Suffolk Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Los Angeles Music Academy, will perform the debut of "Haleakala" by New York composer Carl Strommen, after which Mayor Charmaine Tavares will present a proclamation honoring the Festival. For a complete schedule of all the cool stuff going on and why arts education is so very good for the kids, call 667-2805 or visit online at www.aecg.org. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]
