Calling All Ancestors
Saturday (July 7), 8 p.m. at Lahaina Jodo Mission

July 05, 2007 [CULTURAL] When I was little, we lived in Paia and during the summer my dad would take me to the Bon Dance over at the friendly neighborhood Buddhist graveyard. I would get to wear a kimono and dance around in a circle. The whole point of the Bon (Obon) dance is to summon and give thanks to your deceased ancestors. Even as a little kid, I would get chicken skin during the festivities. Then again, at the age of five, I thought it was the "Bone Dance," which makes a lot of sense. In honor of the Bon Festival, I would like to thank my maternal great-grandparents, Harue Ideguchi and Kamo Kuroda, for coming to Hawai`i where they struggled, lived, loved and spawned a whole family of highly intelligent and beautiful individuals. That would be where I come in. Free. Lahaina Jodo Mission is located at 12 Ala Moana St. in Lahaina. Call 661-4304 for more info. [LB]
