Your Keiki's Shaking

Saturday-Sunday (July 14-15), 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lahaina Cannery Mall

July 12, 2007
[HAWAIIANCULTURE] My much younger sister got her first computer at age three, her very own portable DVD player at five, and a cell phone (with more ring tones than I have fingers and toes) at seven. Now, I don't begrudge her the good stuff, but kids these days have their hands on more cool technology than I ever dreamed of having 20 years ago. That's why things like this weekend's Ninth Annual Keiki Hula Festival are refreshing. Shorties honoring their rich cultural heritage by performing the ancient, graceful dances of their ancestors make me smile. Three hula halau will be dancing to exotic Hawaiian chants and Tahitian drums each day of the festival, and there will also be hands-on cultural activities like lei making, quilting and wood carving to further the no-batteries-required celebration. And Jolie the Clown will be there painting faces for free, and that's just good, clean fun for the whole family. Admission is free. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]
