Just checked out Makena developer Dowling Company's website (www.dowlingco.com) and discovered that it's, well, really green. The Dowling Co., Inc. logo is green, the copyrighted phrase "Building In Balance"? is green, the site's wallpaper is green—even the U.S. Green Building Council Member seal at the bottom of the page has this green tint to it. The webpage exemplifies Dowling's interest in promoting his development firm as environmentally friendly, which is great except that it's totally irrelevant. Well, 70 percent irrelevant. According to a Sept. 27 MediaPost Publications article on a new study by the firm Ipsos Reid, that's the percentage of Americans who believe that it's just a "marketing tactic"? when companies call themselves "green."? When you break the results down by gender, the study indicates that 75 percent of men and 65 percent of women think the "green"? label is just about marketing. Now the reason Dowling didn't drop further is that the study also found that, marketing tactic or not, 10 percent of Americans absolutely would pay more for "green"? home building products and other 46 percent of Americans "might"? pay more for "green"? home products. By my math, that adds up to 56 percent, which is more than the 44 percent of Americans completely or somewhat unwilling to pay more for "green"? building products. So I guess there's hope for him yet.
WATER & POWER
And Wailuku Water Co. rises a notch on news that Central and South Maui customers are ever closer to the county Board of Water Supply instituting mandatory—MANDATORY!—10 percent water reductions if they don't stop using so much damn water. Man, I wish I had one them water companies. Then all you peasants would have to bow before me! What, that's not how it works? Well, maybe if it did we wouldn't have this problem... MTW
