October 11, 2007 Hilariously Hot
Saturday (Oct. 13), 7 p.m. at the McCoy Studio Theater, Maui Arts and Cultural Center
[PERFORMANCE] The Wau Wau Sisters' act has been described as "Cirque du Soleil meets Moulin Rouge"? and although it is my job to come up with an even better way to describe them, I really can't. What I can tell you is that these two incredibly hot, equally hilarious, extremely talented acrobatic burlesque performers have played venues from New York City and Los Angeles to Edinburgh and Australia. They've wowed audiences on the Isaac Mizrahi Show, Sharon Osborne Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live. I watched a short clip of them performing on the trapeze and believe me people, you don't want to miss out on a chance of watching two scantily clad females simultaneously flipping around with faces and crotches dangerously close to one another. Do I need to say more? If you need further visual evidence visit their website at wauwausisters.com. Tickets: $20. 242-7469.
Cowboys don't Cry
Saturday (Oct. 13) 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Kulamalu Field, Upcountry
[FAMILY FUN] You know, it wasn't long ago that I was a preteen with a crush on a boy who played Pop Warner football. He had this shiny sateen team jacket that he would wear to school and if he wanted you to be his girlfriend, he'd ask you to wear it. Well, the day came that he finally asked me to wear it and I did. My sateen jacket days are over, but I'd like to do my part in supporting the next generation of boys and girls who make out on football fields. Hence, Paniolo Fun Day- a fundraiser for the Kulamalu Cowboys complete with a Fun Run, Cowgirl completion, western karaoke, food, games, entertainment, line dancing, jumping castle, rummage sale and much more. Call 572-8816.
Tiki Tales
Saturday (Oct. 13), 11 a.m. at Borders Express, Pi'ilani Shopping Center, Kihei and Tuesday (Oct. 16), 11 a.m. at Maui Ocean Center, Ma'alaea
[KEIKI EVENT] I didn't know this, but Hawaiian monk seals (my favorite animal in the whole wide world) molt—as in shed their skin like a snake. I'm not sure if this makes me like them more or less, but regardless, it's cool. I also didn't know that the Green Sea Turtle's body fat is actually green from eating limu. Weird, huh? Does this mean that my kid's body fat is actually magenta from consuming too many Icees? Kid book author and illustrator Judi Riley who has written When I am Quiet on Maui and When I am Quiet on Oahu will be on hand to talk story about Hawaii's endangered species and the interesting quirks that make them so special. Free endangered species finger puppet crafts will be available. For more information, visit www.tikitales.com or call the Maui Ocean Center at 270-7000.
Bad to the Bone
Saturday (Oct. 13), 7 p.m. at the Castle Theater, MACC
[STAGE] Hali'imaile born Kahekili, the Hawaiian ruler of Maui and Oahu in the late 1700's was bad to the bone. He stood almost seven feet and weighed about 300 pounds. He was a hardcore ruler and a brutal genius when it came to warfare. Kumu Hula Hokulani Holt and halau Pa`u O Hi`iaka, together with na kumu hula Keali'i Reichel and Pali Ahue, reconstruct the original hula drama Kahekili. The drama has been named an American Dance Masterpiece. It integrates hula, Hawaiian martial arts, dramatic narration, ceremonies and cultural practices into an intense performance that Alastair Macauley of the New York Times says, "...stays in the mind."? Tickets: $40, $25, $10 at 242-7469. For information visit MauiArts.org.
