The Heroin Diaries

[BOOK] I like reading diaries. I was going to say that I like drugs, too, but that's not really true anymore. Anyway, The Heroin Diaries--A year in the life of a shattered rock star, contains all the gritty gore you get from spying on someone's secrets as well as a whole lot of drug use. It's a great combination. What's more, the subject (and author) of the book is Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue. He chronicles a whole year of overdosing, boozing, scoring, screwing and nearly dying. I need to say that I was really surprised at the humanity that Sixx shows in many of his entries. At times he comes across as philosophical and (dare I say it?) intelligent and insightful. The characters he meets are classic—Tommy Lee, Slash and the completely insane Vanity, who's become even crazier since she was reborn as Evangelist Denise Matthews. The book is a train wreck, and just as fascinating.

Lawa

[CD] Lawa lead singer Kahala has managed to put into eloquently vicious words what every girl at one time or another has wanted to say, like, "bitch you'd better stay the hell away from my man or I'm going to scratch your eyes out with a jagged fingernail." Okay, maybe that's just me. Her version is "Bitch, I'm Crazy," the first song on Lawa's new self-titled album. It contains just five songs, but it's been in my car's CD player for over a week. I especially like "Let's Go For A Ride," because it totally makes me think of Hana road trips. The seven members of Lawa are all stylishly funky people and the band's got a sound that's tough to classify beyond calling it rocking punk/reggae/ska. Lawa shows are always crazy, high energy good times and Kahala's sultry, raspy voice is reminiscent of Macy Gray or Janis Joplin. www.mauilawa.com (Jessica Armstrong)

The Augie Show

[DVD] The Augie Show is a comedy sketch series staring outrageous local funny man Augie T. He does a flamboyant fitness trainer, a strung-out ice-addicted homeboy and a dead-on Hog the Bounty Hunter, but my favorite character was the enthusiastic Filipino Dog Whisperer who went around shaming people into being better pet owners. Augie does a bit of his classic stand-up for live audience members and introduces his ridiculously local sketches that had me laughing at times, groaning at others, but always shaking my head at that crazy Augie T. There's five episodes with four or more sketches in each, but some of the funniest parts of the DVD are the extras, like the blooper reel which made me laugh so hard I cramped up. (JA)
