Land-owning, sea-shipping giant A&B drops a notch on news that its real estate subsidiary will buy a $50 million light industrial park in Savannah, Georgia. Yeah, sure, it's probably a good buy and all—Sherman liked Savannah so much he took his whole army there—but really, that's irrelevant. The whole point of this list is to find who wields the most power on Maui—not Savannah, Georgia, or any part of Georgia for that matter. A&B can't concentrate its power and influence in too many places around the world—it has to focus! Does Wailuku Water sell something else besides water? Does Hawaiian Telcom deal in other forms of… com? No!

Speaking of Hawaiian Telcom, if it could drop lower than last place this week, I'm afraid it would. According to the Nov. 15 Honolulu Advertiser, in the third quarter the company lost another $29.5 million (it lost $43.9 million in the same quarter last year), as well as 6.9 percent of its land line customers. Making matters worse, the company has decided to sell its directory publishing business—which actually makes money—so that it can reduce its long-term debt. But have no fear—HT will use part of the cash it makes from the sale to give all its residential land line customers a coupon for a free corded phone! How marvelously 20th century! MTW
