Nathan Aweau's Kane'ohe

[CD] This album is the long awaited follow up to Nathan Aweau's E Apo Mai which won him the Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year and the Traditional Album award in 2003. Aweau's vocal range is breathtaking and his tone both haunting and soothing. Kane'ohe gives me the same feeling as Keali'i Reichel's Kawaipunahele, but with a very cool "rock" element. Most of this album is sung in Hawaiian, but there are a few songs sung in English that are phenomenal. Aweau's voice changes dramatically when switching between the two languages, but never fails to be captivating. I think this album will be considered a classic in the years to come.

Maui Pilates

[DVD] I've always been extremely annoyed by exercise videos, with their perfectly choreographed models; a too thin, too smiley instructor displaying perfect hair and too much makeup; and, of course, really bad music. Also, whenever I tried to do workout video at home I always cheated, since no one was watching. But Eva Bondar's Maui Pilates video actually kept me moving. I mean, Bondar is pretty and definitely fit, but she's no skinny model. Annoying music is absent. The only soundtrack is the gentle waves washing up on a Maui beach with a perfect, unobstructed view of Lanai. Gone were my biggest complaints, and there I was on my living room floor, half a mile from the beach, working out with Bondar. I've done Pilates a few times before, and many of her ab moves were familiar, like scissors and the roll-up. She does a lot of stretching, which is nice because I never got so tired that I wanted to quit, and her stretch routine includes a lot of yoga poses, which made me happy. She ends the video with a series of back exercises, and when the work was done I was surprised to find that I'd been going at it for an hour. I guess time just slips by when you're on the beach in Maui. www.mauipilates.net for more info and new workouts. [Jessica Armstrong]

The Stuart Bedasso Show

[PODCAST] As a fellow podcaster, I can relate to all of the "behind the scenes" stuff that goes into producing one of the blasted things. In our studio we have a lot of swearing, pre-recording screaming, snort-producing laughter and, worst of all, dull moments where we have absolutely nothing to say. Enough about us, let's talk about The Stuart Bedasso Show, a locally produced podcast that I like a lot. Hosts Dave and Jill have great chemistry. They play cool music from the Krinkles to Public Enemy and talk about stuff like whooping people's asses and their friend's roommate's heroin problem. Dave's favorite phrase is "goddammit" and I'm pretty sure that he eats those recalled Aquadots. This is really interesting because, like most parents, I have some stray Aquadots left in my home and have been tempted to ingest a few myself. Ruffies rule. Bedasso.blogspot.com. MTW
