January 03, 2008 Time After Time
Friday (Jan. 4) 7:30 p.m., Castle Theater, MACC
[MUSIC] Most of us think of Cyndi Lauper from the 80's, and her hits "Time After Time" and "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." It's no wonder we define Cyndi for her Grammy winning first album She's So Unusual, which catapulted her to the top of the music industry and has sold over 16 million copies worldwide. In her new album The Body Acoustic, Cyndi returns to her favorite hits but adds new material, creating a cohesive work that's been called "timeless and contemporary." With the esteem of her newest record and the success of her recent True Colors Tour in support of human rights, she and her band promises some of our favorite Lauper hits from the 80's delivered from an artist who has grown with her listeners over the past 20 years. Tickets: $55, $65, $75. 242-7469. www.mauiarts.org [PAISLY BENDER]
Hana Hou
Friday (Jan. 4) 5-7:30 p.m. on Market and Main, Wailuku
[EVENT] My, how time flies. We're already coming up on another First Friday in Wailuku town. Bring grandma, grandpa, auntie and uncle down to peruse the shops, eat some food, listen to music, view the art and take advantage of the great deals that many of the town's merchants will be providing to ring in the New Year. I even heard a rumor that Jamaican reggae performer Gavinchi (the same one who rocked Casanova a few weeks back) will perform next to Requests Music. For more information call 249-9710.
Dirty Laundry
Friday-Saturday (Jan. 4-5) 7:30 p.m. at the Iao Theater, Wailuku
[STAGE] Family Laundry, written by late playwright Tremaine Tamayose and the staff of the Kamehameha School's Safe and Drug-Free School program, is a musical/comedy/drama about a Hawaiian family dealing with alcoholism. The title is based on the local opinion that it's wrong to expose your family's secrets and problems to others, even though that's actually the healthiest thing to do. Tickets: Free. For more info visit www.mauionstage.com .
Golf Gods
Now-Sunday (Jan. 6) at the Plantation Course, Kapalua
[SPORTS] Get out your visors and sunscreen–it's time for the Mercedes Championship. This tournament kicks off the 2008 PGA season and you won't want to miss a chance to watch, live and in person, the best of the best in golf as they run around and hit little white balls with high-tech clubs. When was the last time you had the opportunity to be featured as a "oohing" and "ahhing" spectator on the Golf Channel? Tickets: $225-$20. Visit www.kapalua.com for more information.
Bare It All
Monday (Jan 7) 6:30 p.m., Iao Theater, Wailuku
[THEATER] A play with no sets, costumes or lights? No stage directions or line cues? Not for Bare Essential Theater's monthly performances, where all that's needed is a good script, a dozen or so talented actors and a very bare stage. This month's script is To Kill A Mockingbird, based on the classic Harper Lee novel that most skimmed back in grade school and some poured over in college English classes. To refresh your memory, the story is about eight-year-old Scout Finch and her experiences with racism and inequality growing up in the depression-era deep South. There will be treats at intermission. Tickets: Free. Visit www.mauionstage.com for more info. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]
