EHBRAH

January 10, 2008
As both a recreational and commuter bicyclist, I’d like to give a shout out to all of those obscenely large, jacked up, wide load, fat tired, gas guzzling, loud music playing truck driving assholes who think it’s fun to see just how close they can get to the struggling guy on two wheels humping up the hills to Kula, Makawao, Pukulani or even along the flats toward Paia. As green as this state purports to be, these monster trucks make no sense to me, both environmentally and aesthetically. All they seem to do is carry around their owner’s outlandish egos. I’ve been flipped off more than once by one of these atrocities for merely trying the best I can to stay as far to the right of the shoulder as possible. If the lane is too small for you, or if you can’t seem to stay in the lane, THEN GET A SMALLER CAR. That way, maybe you’ll learn to respect the rest of us on the road.

its always pleasing when someone has a new and intelligent perspective on a issue. Your view of the issue really shined a new light on this debate. I mean haterade i never realized that this substance was the source of congestion and traffic problems. Thanks Salzee

    what's the message?
    January 11, 2008 | 12:07 PM

Not sure whose drinking the haterade but i do wonder what the driver of the local boy's toy is thinking. It sure ain't fuel economy, so what is the message he wants us (or his girlfriend) to get as he tears down the road in his 'toy" (mine is just a way to get from A to B)?

    Another angle

I LOVE that these boom box trucks are pounding out da riddim, and expect that in the next 15-20 years we'll be seeing these guys (girls) in sedans with hearing aids. By the way, in the Caribbean where there are many TRUE Rastafarians you don't see them cruising the boulevard in maxed out trucks. They eschew (big word) any thing to do with our society. And they stay quiet, away from materialism. If you live in Hawai'i understand pono. That will help interaction with others.

    get something better to do
    January 14, 2008 | 10:31 PM

well you see there is not much else to do on this island it seems then to drive down the street listening to loud music most of the time they have horrible systems too. For the guys that love their big trucks and loud music, they have a small penis and this is the only way they feel better. Oh yeah they also like having to climb ladders to get into their cars, don't forget to throw down the rope for your 4 feet tall gf's.

If all the big truck guys showed some respect to bikers on the road instead flipping them off and acting rudely, then nothing would be a problem. Like they don't feel tough enough already in a monster truck, they have to prove it with rudeness. It's lame, and comparable to the times I've seen 5 or 6 local guys beat up one haole guy. what's the point?
