I've lived on Maui for six years. It's the most beautiful place on Earth. I wasn't born here and I'm a haole, but I do all I can to keep it beautiful and protect it. I hear and see how the locals are always blaming the white man for Maui's problems (the Superferry, trash, vacation rentals, etc.), but it seems that there's a local undercurrent of blame and racism towards haoles. And it's bullshit: I was driving home from work the other day and in front of me was a car full of locals throwing garbage out the car window. I honked my horn, hoping they would stop, but they didn't. For the next two miles I had to watch them throw trash all over the land that I love and try to care for. Now tell me who really loves this awesome place I now call home?

    trashing Maui
    January 24, 2008 | 09:31 PM

Considering the past history of the kingdom of Hawaii, just suck it up and take the occasional insult. I lived on Maui for a year, and the locals were always friendly to me. Why? I always treated them with respect, and I understood that they sometimes need to bitch about the haoles. So, we have to listen to some bitching, and they lost their nation. Seems like we have a pretty good deal.

    You don know!

I've lived here my whole life and i am a Local. I'm not trying to take anyone's side except mine, Maui IS the most beautiful island (Don't get me wrong) but everybody that keeps talking and saying the haole's or the Locals are the one's that don't take care of the aina, why don't you guys stop talking crap and start cleaning up the aina for a change. It's not the haole's and its not the locals that are trashing the aina, it's everyone else that doesn't care about the aina, and everyone else who doesn't belong here. It might be SOME of the Locals and it might be SOME of the haole's but it's definately not ALL the haole's and it is most definately not ALL the Locals. So now instead of talking, start doing something and cleaning for a change!

To the above.....some locals trash and some haoles trash the aina. This is quite true. Some people trash their bodies as well. All is not well with the world. Wl all must be responsible for ourselves....and in some cases other. We have to carry the we. And yes, help clean up the land.

    I like getting beat up
    February 02, 2008 | 08:49 PM

I'm glad locals kick the shit out of us haoles on a daily basis. We deserve it!! The haoles before us did some pretty scandalous
and dishonest things to the Hawaiians. We haoles must pay for their actions with the occasional beating.
Helpful hints for taking a beating:
    1) Don't fight back. There's usually between 5 and 8 members in the lynching party so why bother.
    2) Cover your head(turtle) I hope help arrives soon.
    3) Always keep a case of Heinekens in your car to offer the lynchmen. It could save you a beating.
    4) When pau, dust yourself off and continue your day with no regret. There's nothing you could have done to prevent this
    beating.....except not moving to Hawaii.

    Just wondering

How about Mexicans? Do you Hawaiianos have a beef with us too? We had half our land stolen by gringos also. I love to visit Hawaii, but I would never claim it like gringos do, I know my history. So should I expect some chingasos from you local boys?

    Haoles must vote
    October 29, 2008 | 04:25 PM

to stop all the negativity towards haoles, haoles must VOTE. Vote the current leaders out of office, and vote the proper people into office. With intelligent (yes, haoles can be intelligent) people in office, the negativity will stop because the power will be in the hands of non-prejudiced people. So VOTE to stop all the anti-haole hate, so we can all move forward.

Share the waves. I'll stay in my vacation home, spend like a sailor and leave you here when I go back mainland. I'm not asking much, just some Aloha.
