January 31, 2008 Up, Down, Shimmy, Shimmy…
Saturday (Feb.2) 7:30 p.m. at The Studio Maui, Haiku; Sunday (Feb. 3) 7:30 p.m. at the McCoy Studio Theater, MACC
[PERFORMANCE] I am most likely to become bi-sexual when in the presence of bellydancers. I love everything about bellydancers—the ornate costumes, heavy makeup, long transparent skirts, bra tops, cute jiggly stomachs, undulating body movements, mysterious gaze and last, but not least, music that they groove to. In fact, I love bellydance so much that I took a few classes with my best friend. During the (as we refer to it) "Earth Mother" era of our lives, we lined our eyes with jet black pencils, dished out major cash for noisy, shiny hip-belts, sewed our own costumes and practiced sultry glares on each other. Sadly, she picked up the movements with ease, while I moved like a non-bendable doll having a seizure. But just because I'm a total dork doesn't mean that I can't enjoy bellydance… from the outside. This is why I'm thrilled that renowned dancer Delilah, her uber-hot Goth/burlesque bellydancing daughter Laura Rose and the House of Tarab (a really awesome Arabic music group from Seattle) will be performing with Maui's Mirayah Delamar and her Sacred Earth Bellydance troupe for two nights on Maui. Oh, and Dreaming Bear–a gorgeous mystical poetry guy–will be there to balance out the hot chick factor with a little testosterone. Oh, the fantasies are almost too much to bear. Tickets: $25. 242-7469 or www.bellydance-maui.com for more details. [STARR BEGLEY]
Celebration in Glimpses
Friday, (Feb 1) 6-9 p.m. at Village Contemporary, Lahaina
[ART RECEPTION] There are very few artists that truly capture people. Suzy Papanikolas is one of them. In fact, she's one of my favorite artists. I was first exposed to her emotion-provoking pieces while staying at the Banyan Tree House on Baldwin Ave. There are so many people out there who capture Hawai`i's gorgeous landscape, sunsets and shore breaks, but there aren't that many who can capture its people. Papanikolas has a knack for finding the precise moment in which to bring her subjects to life. Her ability to portray human expression is phenomenal and inspiring. For more information call 661-5559 or visit www.papanik.com.
Cotton's Still Got It
Friday, (Feb 1) 7:30 p.m., at the Castle Theater, MACC
[MUSIC] There's something about the harmonica that's inherently sexy. It has to do with the harp's proximity to the lips, the hands that cup gently around it and the big, bluesy vibrations it emits when played by a soulful and talented performer. Before I go too far with this, I should point out that harmonica master James Cotton is old enough to be my grandfather. The man's got 64 years of show business under his belt. Back in the day, Cotton ruled the Mississippi blues circuit and jammed with blues legends like Sonny Boy Williams and Muddy Waters. Then he formed his own band. He had the Grammy nominations rolling in throughout his career, but it wasn't until 1996 that he captured the award for his song "Deep in the Blues." If I were just a few decades older I'd be totally smitten. Willie K and the Maui Tribe Blues Band will open the show with their own brand of island blues. Tickets: $50, $45, $38. 242-7469 [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]
It's Cool to be Foreign
Fridays & Saturdays at 7:30 p.m.; Sundays at 5 p.m., (Feb 8-24) at the Iao Theater, Wailuku
[STAGE] One of my guilty pleasures around here is playing tourist. You know, hitting all the popular tourist spots, getting sun-burned hanging out by the pool while sipping pina coladas with colorful umbrellas and asking locals all kinds of obvious questions? It's probably why I want to see the new play The Foreigner. It's about a shady group of characters that unload their dirty laundry and deepest secrets on this one poor guy because they think he doesn't understand English, when in fact he's really just shy and never talks. So he ends up getting all this dirt on a crooked minister, who's cooking up a scandalous plan with his redneck sidekick. So he ends up going along with the scheme and pretending to be all "foreign." Just like me. Now I don't feel so bad. Tickets: $18. 242-6969. [JA]
Another Nelson
Friday (Feb. 1), 9:30 p.m. at Casanova, Makawao and Saturday (Feb. 2) 10 p.m., at Pauwela Cannery, Haiku
[MUSIC] What is up with musicians with the last name Nelson? There's Willie Nelson, the Nelson brothers and last but not least David Nelson. David Nelson is the dude who played with Jerry Garcia and was a major part of the New Riders of the Purple Sage. The David Nelson Band is famous for its "psychedelic country rock" sound and for being one of those all around classic rock bands that has helped define rock and roll over the decades. Tickets: $25.
