And mighty Tesoro swings back into the top spot on news that a "small fire" broke out in a processing unit of the company's Kalaeloa refinery on the night of Feb. 16. Though no one was injured and only a small portion of the refinery was apparently affected, the fire was enough to shut down the whole works. As the Honolulu Advertiser dryly reported online a few hours after the fire, "The plant normally is refining fuel 24 hours a day." Now refinery officials announced Monday morning that they were "restarting operations,"according to Pacific Business News, but feel free to start panicking at any time.

HOME UNSWEET HOME

Our island's most powerful land developers drop a notch this week on news that sales of single-family homes on Maui have plummeted to a 10-year low, according to the Feb. 12 Honolulu Advertiser. The drop in home sales is apparently island-wide and includes resort areas like Ka`anapali and Kapalua. In fact, the median price of a single-family home dropped to $574,113 in January, down five percent from January 2006. Granted, these numbers are for "previously owned" homes, but we need to keep in mind that the whole reason for new home construction is that the existing housing market is unable to keep up with demand. Given that sales have fallen to a 10-year low, it's not easy to make that case. MTW
