This little hole-in-the-wall has long been a favorite with locals who swear by Sam's saimin. No one really knows why saimin (or chicken noodle soup, for that matter) is good at clearing the sinuses and soothing a cold's horrible achy feeling, but it does seem to do the trick. 1750 Wili Pa Loop, Wailuku, 244-7124. WOK STAR
This little noodle house, open just a few weeks in the old Cafe James location, offers a heaping bowl of saimin until midnight–perfect for your late night sneezing fits. 1913 S. Kihei Rd., 495-0066. Open daily 7 a.m.-midnight. $
ENRIQUE'S COCINA MEXICANA
Now that I think about it, musician and Mana'o Radio host Don Lopez once told me that menudo is an even better remedy than saimin—for hangovers, too. And there are few people on Maui making better menudo (otherwise known as tripe soup) than Enrique Castro of Enrique's in Kihei. Originally from Vera Cruz, Mexico, Castro began his culinary education at age 10 when he started working at his mother's taqueria. Doesn't get much more authentic than that. 2395 S. JAMBA JUICE
This popular smoothie franchise may be as bright inside as a tanning salon, but the company bills their "Cold Buster"—Echinecea, OJ, peaches, banana, Agave nectar and ice—as containing 2,100 percent of the daily recommended allowance of Vitamin C. Even by the standards of Linus Pauling (the brilliant physicist who in his later years started filling his pockets with Vitamin C, which he said would cure everything), that's a lot of Vitamin C. Then again, it does taste really good. Located island-wide. $
ALIVE & WELL
You know what? When all else fails, just try these guys. They've got a huge health foods and vitamin section and can probably offer a dozen teas and herbs that will clear you right up.
