French Kiss

Thursday, May 22, 9:30 p.m. at Casanova, Makawao

[STAGE] I wasn't sure exactly how to define this event. Ooh La La? Music? Nope, it's all that and more. It's cabaret! Moana Diamond, also known as "Mademoiselle Kiki," will be coming to Maui to perform Cabaret D'Amour–an act full of music, costume, beauty and Parisian charm. Diamond fell in love with the stage as a child and her first trip to Paris at the age of 15 sealed the deal. Since then, she's dedicated her life to the art and her heart to all things French. So, bust out that feather boa and slip on some kitten heels and get your bootie to Casanova for a (pseudo) night in Paris! Tickets: $13 in advance, $15 at the door. For more information www.frenchcabaret.net or 572-0220. [STARR BEGLEY]

Attack of the Celtics

Thursday-Sunday, various times and locations across the island

[MUSIC] Seriously, there's going to be a ton of great Celtic music going on this week. Maui Celtic is presenting Tim Readman and Shona Le Mottee, both high-profile, acclaimed musicians to play four venues in four nights all over the island. Readman's a Celtic songsmith, guitarist and performer that I hear is absolutely engaging; Le Mottee is the doll with the fiery fiddle who captured the crowd in Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance. Here's the lowdown: Thu. 7 p.m. at Lahaina Methodist church, $15; Fri. 6 p.m. dinner and show at Mulligan's on the Blue, $39, reservations required 874-1131; Sat. 7:30 p.m. at The Studio Maui, Haiku, $20, 575-9390; Sun. 4 p.m. at Haleakala Waldorf, Kula, $20.

Esquire + Charley's = Awesome

Friday, May 23, at 10 p.m., Charley's, Paia

[MUSIC] A little kitchen fire isn't going to stop the crew at Charley's from throwing awesome parties. Okay, my favorite Paia bar did have to shut down for a few months to completely rebuild and redecorate, but now the place is looking great with a brand new bar, snazzy new floors and a fresh paint job. They also put up for new, better sound equipment, so Maui's own guitar hero Vince Esquire will rock particularly hard when he takes the stage this weekend. It may be a little less retro now, which I have mixed feelings about, but the important thing is that Charley's is back. This weekend is sort of a soft opening with a big re-opening party planned for next week. $10. 579-9668 [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]

Slackers, but in a good way

[MUSIC] Saturday, May 24, at 7:30 p.m., McCoy Studio Theater, MACC

Slack key guitar has been a Brown family tradition for more than three generations. It all began when brothers Kevin and Sheldon inherited the musical gene and a passion for slack key from their father. Inspired by the traditional sounds of old Hawai`i, the local boys formed a band called Waiehu Sons, recorded several albums and performed together for two decades around Maui. Along the way Kevin's son Ikaika picked up the slack key and joined the party, recorded a few albums of his own and now performs regularly with his father and uncle. Tickets: $30. 242-7469 [JA]

Enlightened Afternoon

[EVENT] Sunday, May 25, at 3 p.m., Studio Maui, Haiku

Sunday Satsang featuring Ram Dass takes the meaning of "Talk Story" to a whole new level. Ram Dass will be joined by guests and friends Sat Santokh, a spiritual teacher and social activist who's–get this!–the former manager of the Grateful Dead; Geoffrey Gordon, a musician, composer and singer with a gift for presenting kirtan and Daniel Paul, a Maui resident and award winning tabla drummer. The point is to collaborate, celebrate and contemplate the divine. As with all things truly divine, potluck follows. Suggested donation: $10. For more information www.studiomaui.com
