June 05, 2008 I (Heart) Ocean
Friday–Sunday (Jun. 6-8) various times, Maui Ocean Center, Ma`alaea
[FESTIVAL] In case you haven't noticed—which would mean that you're either comatose or an infant—we're surrounded by water. It's salty, warm and full of yummy fish, beautiful coral and, for half the year, humpback whales. Not only is the ocean beautiful, it's ridiculously and vitally important to the survival of the human race. Here's a fun and delicious way to learn about protecting the deep blue—eat it. Head up to Seascape Restaurant in Ma`alaea on Friday for a dinner buffet with sustainable fish from Maui waters and locally grown produce and products. You'd be amazed at the vast amount and variety of food items that are grown, produced, and raised on Maui. On Saturday and Sunday the Maui Ocean Center will host live music and hula dancing, games, prizes, ocean arts and crafts, informational booths and a special performances by GameKids Performing Arts and `Ulalena dancers, all included with regular admission. Sustainable buffet tickets: $65 plus tax & gratuity, 6 p.m. For a complete schedule of events visit www.mauioceancenter.com or call 270-7000. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]
Thou Shalt Not Conform
Thursday (Jun. 5,) at 9:30 p.m., Café Mambo, Paia
[FILM] I know, the Maui Film Festival is in full swing this week. But if you want to watch a movie in a public setting without all of the fancy-pants drama that can come with it, check out Cinema Night at Café Mambo this Thursday. This week, the movie playing is Death at a Funeral, a hilarious but slightly creepy black comedy directed by Frank Oz. I'm dying (ba-dum-dum) to see it. Tickets: $5 and the option to buy food (come early) and drinks. For more information visit www.cafemambomaui.com.
Mo Ichi Do
Friday (Jun. 6) at 5:30 p.m., Wailuku Town
[EVENT] That would be, "One more time" to you. First Friday's back, just like the First Friday before it and the one before that and so on. In fact, First Friday has become such a fixture in Wailuku that last month I took it for granted and didn't make a big fuss. This week, the public can look forward to entertainment by Pam Gamboa Peterson, DJ Jamz, the MAPA dancers and Jocelyn Romero Demirbag and Freedom. Bill Best from Manao Radio will be the celebrity artist at Gallery Ha. For more information call Teri Edmonds at 249-9710.
Living Lahaina
Saturday (Jun. 7) 10 p.m., Giovanni's Tomato Pie Restaurant, Ka`anapali
[MUSIC] Just when I thought that I'd heard every band on the Lahaina night scene in my year and a half on the Westside, my boss tells me to write about one that has yet to make a bleep on my radar. When I looked them up on Myspace.com the first thing that struck me as cool about Versatile was that there's, like, nine or 10 of them up on stage at a time. These guys are no small operation. There are several rhythm and bass guitars, percussion, keyboards and at least two guys doing vocals. But despite the crowded stage their sound is deceptively simple and minimal. Yeah, it's more roots reggae and dub music, but somehow on the Westside we never get tired of that chill, irie vibe. Cover: $5. 661-3160. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]
Thoughts become Things
Sunday (Jun. 8) 7:30 p.m. at the Fairmont Kea Lani, Wailea
[INSPIRATION] Your wish is the universe's command. Mike Dooley, celebrated speaker and author that has manifested himself into a happy and successful existence, will be coming to Maui to spread the good news. What news? That thoughts become things. Oh wait, does that mean that all the negative things I've been thinking will probably come true too? It does? Crap. Well, I'm sure Dooley will have some tips on keeping my manifesting machine (aka, mind) on things that are happy like big fat raises, vacations, a larger cup size and immortality. Tickets: $30. Check out the video clip on www.tut.com or www.globalmediaproductions.com for more information.
