Picture Day

The LC Adjudication Board had “school pictures” last Thursday. However, no one told them it was picture day. And Glen Kunitake didn’t appear to be too pleased whenTommy Russo, Maui Time Weekly’s own fearless leader, was in the room taking photos and video of the LC for Maui Time readers.

But, the time has come to shine a light on the board–the good, the bad, the old and young–and finally put some faces to the names.

For example, this is Frank Silva, the LC Director.

And here’s Kunitake hiding behind his coffee cup. Just after this shot was taken, he asked the Director, “Are cameras allowed in this room?” Of course, the answer is yes. And that’s so readers can see what’s happening without taking a day off for the trip.

There was some liquor adjudication business too. The score from the first hearing? LC–1 Flatbread in Paia–0 when they were fined $2000 for serving a minor decoy.

New Deputy Prosecuting Attorney, Evans Smith was settling into his role in the LC hearing room. Nothing too eventful occurred, except he kept calling Adjudication Board Chairperson, “Your Honor”. This, of course, reminded me of Chevy Chase talking to the Judge in Caddyshack. “It’s your honor, your Honor.” But that has nothing to do with this.

And, Chief Enforcement Officer Bill Pacheco verified that minor decoys, which all seem to be 19 years old, are both male and female. They volunteer for the opportunity to go into the bar and practice ordering a beer. Minor decoys earn a small honorarium for the day (so as not to endanger their amateur status?). And, says Pacheco, they volunteer for the job out of a calling for public service.
