Mix Master May

Saturday (Jun. 14) 10 p.m.,Casanova Makawao

[MUSIC] Back before techno was techno, there was Derrick May. In the mid 1980s, while I occupied my time dressing up dolls and learning the alphabet, May was busy being a musical genius in Detroit. Along with high school friends Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Eddie Fowlkes, May jump-started a new trend in music that synthesized funk, soul and R& B beats into a sound called techno that quickly spread across the nation and the world. More than 20 years later the musical mastermind still packs dance floors with his distinctive style of electronic music and pushes the frontier of beats in innovative directions that inspire DJs and partiers everywhere. Tracks like "Nude Photo" and "Strings of Life" put him on the map back in the day and May hasn't stopped impacting the techno scene since. If it sounds like I'm fawning over him, I am, because this guy is a really big deal, and once again Casanova and NITELIFE are bringing it home to Maui with some seriously respectable beats. Tickets: $15. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]

Pimp and Ho!

Saturday, (Jun. 14) 10 p.m. Giovanni's, Ka`anapali.

[PARTY] Not that anyone cares, but I spent the last few months in school working towards a more egalitarian society, as well as educating on and promoting safer sex practices. To write about this is…anticlimactic, to say the least. So ladies, buy the skimpiest thing you can find, and go out there and be objectified! Gentlemen, feel free to forget that many women have worked hard to overcome subservient stereotypes! But, when you're wonderfully drunk and sloppy, ready to bump uglies with that hot pimp/ho, I want you to remember: The Center for Disease Control has found that 1 in 4 teenage girls already have an STD, and that most condom fail rate comes from human error. Not only bring a condom, but practice putting one on. $10, $5 in costume. www.myspace.com/elementsentertainment808 [YNEZ TONGSON]

Upcountry Fair

Saturday-Sunday, (Jun. 14-15) 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Oskie Rice Rodeo Grounds, Makawao

[EVENT] What's not to love about a fair? There's food, live entertainment, a sense of community and in this case, livestock. I hear there might be pony rides too. As someone who hails from central Maui, my childhood was completely devoid of pony rides. So, unless you want your kid to end up like me, I would highly recommend you take them to the Upcountry Farm Fair this weekend. This one action might save you a lot in future therapy bills. Then again, just spending time at the fair with your family, even sans pony rides, might save you a lot of money in the therapy department. Admission: Free. [YT]

Saturday, (Jun. 14) starting at 10 a.m. at the Queen Ka`ahumanu Center, Kahului

[EVENT] Tom and Jerry are coming! Tom and Jerry are coming! Yep, it's time for the 4th annual Toon Fest at the Queen Ka`ahumanu Center again and it looks like it's gonna be a blast. The Meadow Gold Baby Crawl starts at 10 a.m. and Brenton Keith and his Bag 'O Tricks will be putting on a magic show at 11:15. The line to see Tom and Jerry (hopefully they won't be trying to kill each other with cheese-graters and mallets) starts at noon. As an added bonus, the first 100 kids in line will get a mall backpack filled with goodies worth over 50 clams. Yeah, you better get there early. [SB]

Organ Frenzy

Tuesday (Jun. 17) Makawao Union Church

[MUSIC] You know, music doesn't always have to be about fast, hard-hitting beats and ear-splitting rock and roll. Some times a girl just wants to sit back and listen to the soothing, powerful tunes of a classical organ while a choir sings something ethereal and soulfully... oh, who am I kidding? I haven't seen the inside of a church since before leg warmers were cool and the only time I hear organ music is during the scary, suspenseful parts of B movies, so I'll just give you the good, old-fashioned facts. Concert organist extraordinaire Paul Jacobs has some serious credibility. For starters he received a Masters in music from Yale University and is now the Chairman of the organ department at the Julliard School in New York City. Jacobs been named Best Organist by New York magazine, has won dozens of awards and has a huge repertoire of classical and contemporary music. Yeah, he's bad-ass, even if he does play the classical organ. Admission is free. 579-9261 [JA]
