Haunted

[BOOK] Since Choke will be hitting theatres soon, people will probably want to familiarize themselves with some of Chuck Palahniuk's novels. In Haunted, the overall story is about 17 people who decide to participate in a writer's retreat. From there, it's a contest for who can exploit human suffering the most, even if it means destroying all their essential resources and each other. Haunted is composed of 23 short stories that highlight Palahniuk's ability to captivate the audience in the same way car accidents do. That is, you want to look away, but you can't.

Rant

[BOOK] Before you start thinking Rant is about some angst-ridden teenager's poorly written blog, let me clarify: in this context, "rant" is the sound of a boy's neighbors being violently ill, after a prank involving animal organs. Of course, this leads to that lovely sound being the boy's nickname. This same boy later finds that being bitten by highly poisonous spiders have, ahem, rather interesting side effects. He uses this to his advantage to receive an early diploma from high school and a rather sizeable check. From there, things just get even more twisted. Think of Rant as being an informal introduction to biological warfare of the worst kind.

Snuff

[BOOK] Snuff is baby-mama-drama of a different sort. Snuff is the tale of one porn queen, Cassie Wright, going for a record of 600 sex acts caught on film. Except, the real juicy stuff isn't so much what's caught on screen, but what the guys waiting around for their turn are involved in. Rumor is that in the middle of her career, Cassie left the business to have a child. Even more titillating is the rumor that the child is present for the momentous occasion, ready to claim its birthright. It's these sorts of issues that would make even Freud squirm. After reading this novel, I was convinced that no woman could possibly do 600 men in one sitting. Leave it up to good ole' American ingenuity to prove me wrong. While Palahniuk's novels have always seemed to stretch the truth a little, that's nothing compared to Lisa Sparxxx's record in 2004 of 919 men in one session.
