July 17, 2008 Augie’s Awesome
Thursday (July 17) 7 p.m., Elleair Ballroom, Maui Beach Hotel
[COMEDY] Augie T’s got a mess of longtime fans on Maui who’ve grown up with his unique, local brand of stand-up comedy, but if you’ve never split your sides listening to this funny guy from Oahu in person, on his OC16 television show or on his hit radio show that broadcasts to Maui on Q103.7, now is the time to find out what everybody’s been laughing at. Augie walks the line between family-friendly material and almost inappropriate jokes that will go right over the head of your pre-teen kids but will keep you rolling the whole time. Plus you’ll get a few new jokes to tell your coworkers on Monday. Tickets: $15 in advance, $20 at the door. 872-9307. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]
Moon + Tidepools
Friday (July 18), 6:30 pm, South Maui.
A note to parents: You do know kids compare their summers when they go back to school, right? Some kids will travel to foreign countries, others will go to different states and there’s always that one kid who shadowed his surgeon/movie star/community leader relative. What sort of story will your kid have this summer? Well, to help ensure that your progeny is at the top of his or her class (vacation-wise, at least), you should give a call to the Pacific Whale Foundation Full Moon Tide Pool Explorations. Here kids will get to view rarely seen nocturnal species by the light of the moon. Okay, maybe it’s not France, but at least it’s not just sitting in front of the television. Pre-registration is required. Ages 6+. Adults: $10. Child: $5. For more information visit www.pacificwhale.org or call 249-8811 ext 1. [YNEZ TONGSON]
Pop, Lock and Drop It
Saturday (July 19), 6:30 p.m, Events Lawn, MACC.
I try not to watch too much television. Even so, the impact of America’s Best Dance Crew was pervasive and ever-present. I watched helplessly as old friends sided against one another, all over who was the better dance crew: Kaba Modern or JabbaWockeeZ. When Kaba Modern was sent home, I witnessed people go into official mourning. Now you can see these dance crews break, pop and lock in person at the Summer Mele. They’ll be joined by Lisa Lisa and Angel the Original Cover Girl. In addition to this star-studded performance will be the first ever Maui vs. Oahu B-Boy showdown, joined by Maui’s own Dani Girl. $37 in advance, $45 day of show. Advance tickets available at MACC box office, Premier Video and Music in Kihei; Old Lahaina Book Emporium in Lahaina; Request Music in Wailuku. [YT]
Relay for Life
Saturday (July 19) All Day Event, War Memorial Stadium, Central Maui.
With the influx of superhero movies flooding theaters, it’s easy to lose sight of who our true heroes are. The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life has been helping people fight cancer since 1985. During the Relay for Life event, communities come together to find ways to prevent cancer, save lives and diminish suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. The event goes on into to the night to signify that cancer never sleeps and that the people working to cure the disease don’t either. Let’s see the Hulk smash that. Fundraising event. Maui Film Festival Presents ‘Smart People’
Thursday (July 23) 5:00pm, MACC
I feel for all the boyfriends who were dragged into the Sex and the City movie with their girlfriends, I really do. But you must have done something really terrible to have been goaded into that one. Well guys, brace yourself again, she just might want to see Smart People, which features Sarah Jessica Parker, as well as Dennis Quaid and Ellen Page of Juno fame. The title of the movie pretty much explains the story: A bunch of clever-yet-dysfunctional people trying to get through the things life throws at them. Guys, look at it this way—at least the movie has nothing to do with shoes. Tickets: $12. For more information visit www.mauifilmfestival.com. [YT]
