FOLLOW THE MONEY

You do a great job following the LC. It is what I flip to first each week. Every week we are alerted to a different establishment being fined thousands of dollars, sometimes for petty infractions, by the LC. Where does this money go? Who is following the paper trail? I am curious to find out where it ends. Is there an LC savings account building exponentially? Here is food for thought. Instead of paying penalties to the LC, why don't the "guilty" write checks to Maui School District? Multiple times last week, I encountered volunteers spending hours soliciting school supplies for Maui schools. We are in a sad state when $1B/MONTH goes to fight a war overseas when we are losing a battle in our classrooms. Let's make a negative into a positive. LC fines for textbooks!

SURF'S DOWN

Re: The recent feature on the surf doc Bustin' Down the Door ["Waves of Change," July 31]: This was obviously written by someone not affected by surfing culture. When will Maui Time fully incorporate the voice and talents of the people who are impacted by the topics discussed? It felt as if the author were completely dispassionate about the topic, surfing, which has easily surpassed the mere boundaries of a pastime or hobby and has entered the realm of lifestyle, especially in Hawaii.

SPACED OUT

Hey, you guys have done two straight covers about ocean stuff, how about one that takes us into the final frontier…outer space! Stargazing is better nowhere else besides on Maui. I look to the heavens every night and thank the good Lord I was born at a time when we might be able to go to Mars, Jupiter, the rings of Saturn or…beyond? So come on, let's hear about the things people on Maui are doing to make my space dreams come true!
