Battle Royale

Maui's musicians duke it out as rock takes center stage

August 07, 2008
There’s no shortage of great music and musicians on Maui. Maybe it’s the laid-back lifestyle, peaceful jungles, majestic mountains or rolling waves, but the tunes flow freely around here. I know this because I have a stack of promotional CDs that could crush a school-aged child sitting by my desk. But a brief look through the titles points out one of the only problems with Maui’s music scene: it’s all reggae.

OK, maybe it isn’t all reggae. Some of it is contemporary Hawaiian, some is Jawaiian and a small amount is traditional Hawaiian language music. There’s a lot of ukuleles and slack key guitars in my desk-side collection, that much I know for sure.

It’s good musicians creating good music, and that’s OK, but a girl’s got to wonder—doesn’t anyone like to listen to rock out here? “Big deal” reggae shows happen pretty much every weekend, but most mainstream rock bands look right over Maui on their international tours.

That’s where DJ Jojo comes in. The X92.5 FM radio personality and arguably Maui’s biggest rocker spearheaded the effort to spotlight the island’s rock scene with a good, old-fashioned Battle of the Bands.

“It’s not that I don’t like reggae,” the shaggy-haired DJ told me through glassy eyes after one of last week’s preliminary battles. “I do, but I’m from the Mainland and I’m out here wondering, ‘Where the rock?’ I started the Battle of the Bands to get Maui’s rock scene together.”

Finalist highly unlikely
Out of all the bands that put their name in the hat, twelve were chosen to take their turn competing in four battles. The winner of each of those rounds will compete this weekend for $1,000 and an opportunity to open for 311 at the hit-making band’s upcoming concert.

Round one winner Erin Smith Band won over the audience at the Hard Rock Café in Lahaina with original bluesy, folk rock tunes and Smith’s commanding stage presence. The Toronto native relocated to Kihei and got busy singing and strumming at bars and restaurants all over Maui, so she’s got quite a following of loyal listeners. She’s also the only chick in this competition, so she probably gets the female vote by default.

The following week the crowd packed into Casanova in Makawao to see the Haiku-grown band Highly Unlikely. The four members showed their youth with fast-and-hard punk inspired sounds that impressed the judges and packed the dance floor with partiers.

Lahaina band Silky Ringo plugged their typically acoustic rock sound in and put their unique touch on a high-energy set of cover songs, punctuated with a few originals, at the next competition. These hard working guys have regular gigs around Lahaina and Kihei, and in the end they took the win to the delight of a screaming group of West side fans.

The final band to reach round two in this Battle was Byron Brown and the Derelicts, who lace thoughtfully catchy lyrics through mellow, soul- and funk-infused rock tunes.

So there you have it. This weekend the folksy blues chick, the young punkers, the cover rockers and the soulful strummers will come with their A-game and put it all on the line-- for bragging rights, for the dough and for the ultimate prize, the opportunity to play in front of an audience of hundreds and share the stage with the Mainland rockers from 311.

I was there, I shot video of all four bands, Silky Ringo won hands down. Every BoB that the Hard Rock has sponsored has been rigged. Remember Deviltown?

At least the Deviltown Battle of the Bands Was Rigged
    August 16, 2008 | 05:47 PM

Can't speak for the current battle, but I know for a fact that the Battle with Deviltown was rigged, I was there, I knew the story of how it all went down. I have friends in almost all of the bands that played this year. At least the battle gave attention to the non-reggae acts on the island, they need it. Not everyone likes reggae, sorry.... I happen to like reggae and I listen to all kinds of music from Bob Dylan to Mindless Self Indulgence... I'm a dying breed I guess.

Whatever happened to rock n' roll?
    August 17, 2008 | 04:33 PM

First of all all the musicians were all very talented at what they do in this competition. But how could a girl in a white dress and high heels win a Battle of the ROCK Bands competition. And has for Silky Ringo. It may have been the cheesiest moment rock when they decided to do a cover of 311, of whom they're trying to open up for. Yeah!!!That's rocknroll. What a joke. Sorry folks, not to take anything away from Erin Smith, she's talented in her field, but she's not rock n roll. When I think of rock n roll Erin Smith and Silky Ringo are the last things to come to mind. Expand your horizons Maui people and get off this reggae ska riff bubble that you have all been trapped in. Rock n roll is supposed to be sweaty, aggressive, emotional, dangerous, and most importantly a show. Just didn't see it at the Hard Rock with some of the bands. Rock n roll isn't a dress and high heels...

    This ain't a scene...

    Rigged for who?
    August 18, 2008 | 06:47 PM

What I saw was Erin Smith with no sound tech support against a cover band that was heavily favored in the venue. Couldn't even hear her voice the first two songs and when she called for a guitar change there was no one there. Who was the sound guy working for? Maybe he was as wasted as everyone else. Tough to be the last act when the crowd is more focused on hooking up then what's happening on stage.

    Stereotyped at a rock show
    August 18, 2008 | 07:02 PM

I thought rock and roll was about busting out of conformist stereotypes, and contests were about talent. Are you meaning to say that if the girl was in leather pants she would have got more credit? She put on a sweaty, emotional, competitive show- and high heels are dangerous if used incorrectly. Try wearing them next time you're on stage.

    You're right though... this ain't a scene

    If the winner of this.....
    August 18, 2008 | 07:55 PM

contest were to open for Cheryl Crow or Lisa Loeb, then Erin Smith would've of been a perfect fit. But 311 is a rock band. Can someone please tell me how Erin Smith fit with 311? Anybody....

"I thought rock and roll was about busting out of conformist stereotypes"

Erin Smith fails to do this by a long shot. She stands out at a x92.5 Battle of the Bands because she doesn't belong on x92.5 WHERE MAUI ROCKS. She fits right in with KISS FM along side similar acts Lisa Loeb, Colby Caillat, Michele Branch, Alanis Moriset, Natalie Imbrigula, Natasha Bedingfield, Jewel, Cheryl Crow...the list goes on

    Sound Check
    August 18, 2008 | 08:35 PM

As for the Sound Tech, he was no where to be found for any bands. Byron Brown didn't sound his reglar self. Highly Unlikely yelled out for them on several occasions. Quick Day Scout from the first night might has well been playing their instruments through a mgaphone and would've gotten better sound. For being a Hard Rock Cafe they truly failed at putting forth Hard Rock sound quality. That's not an issue favoring any group. It's Moo like a cow's opinion

    Conformist Stereotyping
    August 19, 2008 | 07:32 AM

What I meant was that you folks have stereotyped ROCK and made it something that others have to conform to, like it will never evolve past whatever your idea of it should be. Maybe we all have a different idea of rock, like Rolling Stones vs. Henry Rollins vs. Incubus, or even that to say something rocks!! could be interpreted more than one way. Most of the new stuff on 92.5 doesn't sound like rock to me, I find it boring and unoriginal. And when did 311 become the poster child of rock? The 311 songs I've heard are as fluffy and predictable as some of the women you mentioned.
Bands that have opened for The Stones- Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Smashing Pumpkins, Sheryl Crow, and Alanis Morissette. Bands that have opened for Alanis Morissette- Radiohead and Our Lady Peace, she also won grammys for best Rock song and Rock album, as has Sheryl Crow. Who's idea of rock is that?

    Just sayin'

Just moved here from Portland a couple of months ago, where the rock scene is saturated with many great bands. I was at the 311 show on Friday nite with my friend and saw Erin Smith open. Turned to my friend and asked who this was...she said she won the battle of the bands on Maui. Then thought...hmmmm, if this is the best rock band maui has to offer, maui doesn't have much of a rock scene whatsoever. I'd actually like to go to some rock shows out here, who are the good bands out here to go see?
