Iao Me Mine

Top local musicians cover the Beatles in Wailuku

You can tell a lot about a person from their favorite Beatles album. Obviously it's a tough choice that requires lengthy deliberation and changes over the course of one's life. Unlike, say, the Beach Boys' discography, which contains kinda-cheesy titles like All Summer Long and astonishing gems like Smile, every Beatles album has an array of elements that make it fantastic.

Still, I communicate differently with those who say it's Beatles For Sale hands down than I do with people who tell me Revolver (which is my favorite).

One's favorite Beatles song is a good indicator as well. I would be much more intrigued by someone who most adores "The Fool on the Hill" than someone whose all-time fave is "All My Loving." Mine is "Fixing A Hole" (I know—it's not on Revolver).

The Beatles' profound influence on music and culture in general lies partly in their fearless experimentation with sound (and a few other things). Consider "Norwegian Wood," on which George Harrison implemented the sitar after having played one that was part of a set for the film Help!

Yet the Beatles' innovation is merely part of what made them so amazing. Their music is at once universally accessible and painfully profound (surely a result of the Lennon/McCartney songwriting collaborations).

So what's my point, then?

AE
Well, most Beatles tunes translate well into interpretations by other musicians, which is why a Beatles cover show is a brilliant idea. Having a killer lineup that includes some of Maui's best musicians—all of whom will be interpreting the Beatles tunes of their choice—is a sure bet for drawing a sizable crowd.

Given the diversity of Maui's music scene, next Friday's Beatles cover show, which takes place at the Iao Theater, will likely be an utterly dynamic evening. Even if each act's set includes "Blackbird," there are hundreds of ways to pull it off in a unique manner.

It'll be interesting to see which songs each artist chooses. Personally I'd like to see what Randall Rospond of the Haiku Hillbillys would do with "Eleanor Rigby." I also wouldn't mind seeing rock and roller extraordinaire Erin Smith bust out a gut-punching "Helter Skelter." That would be most bitchen.

Other acts in Friday's lineup include: Anuhea, whose soulful approach is sure to do any Fab Four tune justice; Jerry Caires; Melissa M. from Mojomana; and a handful of others. Fulton Tashombe leads.

The evening's non-Beatle-related perks include passed pupus courtesy of Hailiimaile General Store's Bev Gannon, auctions and the like.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this night will not serve solely as a celebration of the most influential band in rock and roll history. The Beatles' perpetual message—love tinged with the ideal of true progress—fits exceedingly well within the current post-election afterglow many of us are experiencing.

Whichever album is your favorite, let's come together for this one. MTW

Hey Katie just an observation! You must really like Erin Smith? I love Erin too! But with 4 Maui musicians that came out with NEW CD's release's I haven't seen one write up yet? Is their a reason why you haven't gone out to watch these bands play?

Ipo, the main reason that I haven't done much on either is a lack of communication...I'm still relatively new to my post. I also, frankly, don't know many people, and going to a show at a bar alone is not wise. I recently, however, did see Guerrilla Jazz and was intrigued by their sound. I would love to do a writeup on them. In any case, thanks for the feedback. Perhaps you could contact me directly and you can get me in touch with the right people.

Erin Smith, Rock and Roller extraordinaire? HAHAHAHAHAA Silly Maui music scene, so clueless

Kate are you expecting bands to come to you for interviews and articles? Isn't it your JOB to go out and find these bands? I hear that some bands that you have had contact with has gotten the shaft....What's up

    Why review these bands?
    November 24, 2008 | 03:44 PM

Assault Squad Riders, Gorilla Jazz, An Den and Maoli maybe decent bands on a local level. From a world-wide point of view they are nothing special, in fact not impressive at all. They would get laughed off the stage if they weren't playing Maui. I've seen a lot a bands here, they are spoiled. They actually get paid and they are rewarded for playing covers. Not too many places on the mainland pay bands. And doing covers is considered lame over there.

I do understand needing to do 'covers' to get paid out here. But is that worthy of a review?

Is the goal to just get on OC16? If so, I guess these bands are good enough for that.

Don't expect White Rose or Erin Smith to be on OC16, they don't fit the model and make 'local' locals bands seem weak in comparison.

Why don't you go back to Portland? You seem to hate us so much here, perhaps you can go back to the land of Everclear?

I was born and raised here in maui, but did actually attend higher education on the mainland unlike a lot of our local friends here. I know what it's like off the rock, and credit a lot of my knowledge to it. It doesn't deny the absolute beauty of Maui, that's why I live here. i don't hate it here, the music scene here is jsut so clueless.

On any given night, in any given venue in the mainland you will find musicians that bring as much if not mroe to the table than Erin Smith or many other local bands would. IUt's not that the talent isn't out there on Maui. it's just that silly people praise those that have nothing new to present us. yippee! ska riffs, music about catching some wave, and bar tunes that Tourist get to enjoy while drinking their pina coladas.

Cmon Maui people, open your ears to something other than what is pushed in front of you. And Ms. Kate, i would love for you to be succesful, but a good entertainment column would require alittle bit more effort into finding the something else...

    I love you guys

OC16 and PRG have brainwashed you
    November 25, 2008 | 12:48 PM

The main problem with the Hawaiian Music Scene is this:

OC16 and the Pacific Radio Group

They have dumbed down and entire generation musically and made them think the popular bands are actually good because they're on radio and TV. Do you really think those bands could get airplay on the mainland. If you haven't been, you'll have to trust me, they won't get far.

Thanks Hawaii, OC16 and Pacific Radio Group for giving false hope to those musicians.

And now back to my Huey Lewis, Ekolu, Iron Maiden, Billy Ocean, An-Den, Taylor Swift, Rampage, Atreyu and Sonic Youth CD's.

    Boycott 103.7 and 93.5
