Ozo good
Friday (Jan. 30), 7:30pm, Castle Theater, MACC
Unless you count layovers at LAX, I have spent all of three nights in California. One of those was in L.A. As my friend's car closed in on the So Cal sprawl I realized that I recognized most of the city's streets and suburbs from Frank Zappa lyrics, as Zappa routinely made fun of the city. And if it wasn't "Plastic People," "Billy the Mountain" or "San Ber'dino" that clued me into the existence of the city's various features, it was The Big Lebowski (the only reason, thankfully, I've heard of In-N-Out Burger). As one of the six transplants on Maui that's not from California it's no surprise that I'm also one of the few people that hasn't had much exposure to Ozomatli. This ultra-eclectic L.A.-based band is said to be somewhat of an encapsulation of the City of Angels, at least in the sense that they embrace sounds from every locale and every genre, from raga to reggae, from merengue to funk. They have served as cultural ambassadors and they've won a couple Grammys. I'm told that they put on an absolutely killer show the last time they were here, and this time they've reunited with conscious rapper Chali 2na. Call 242-7469 for tickets. $25/$30 day of show.

Tough times, great tunes
Saturday (Jan. 31), 3pm, Lahaina Civic Center
My cousin has a theory: the worse the economy, the better the music. A number of factors would undoubtedly contribute to this, including the fact that staring ruin in the face inspires us to write about things that aren't petty. Indeed, the factors that led to the economic collapse are far better song lyric fodder than some random songwriter's breakup. The bands in tonight's lineup have been shunning such trifling subject matter for some time, and have the monikers to prove it. California surf punk outfit Agent Orange and Haiku-based hardcore punk band Order of the White Rose both derive their names from dark historical times. The first obviously gets its name from the Monsanto product used during the Vietnam War to clear jungle foliage, which caused severe genetic mutation in those exposed to it. The second band gets its name from a group of university students in WWII-era Germany who peacefully resisted Nazism. Other bands in this all-ages show's lineup include D.I. and Old Habits Die Hard. Tickets available at Lahaina Skate Company, 967Ko in Kahului, Charley's in Paia, through Ticketmaster or by calling 214-5152. $25/$35.

Smokin' grass
Saturday (Jan. 31), 10pm, Casanova, Makawao
Upcountry is probably one of the best spots to check out a band like Haiku Hillbillys (who intentionally misspell "Hillbillys"), especially Makawao, given its history and cowboy aesthetic. Their sound in a nutshell: they borrow heavily from the outskirts of country, the outskirts that almost verge on bluegrass, moaning fiddle and all. Yet they are bluesy and hard-driven. The Dylan influence (more Modern Times than Blonde on Blonde) is apparent, and so is their musicianship. Guitarist and vocalist Randall Rospond and lead guitar player Tom Conway (of Gypsy Pacific Fame) use the elements at their fingertips to conjure a tasty folk/gypsy/grass sound you won't find in any other act on-island. Rospond and the boys are some of the hardest working musicians on Maui; Saturday's Casanova gig is an opportune time to show them some love. Rospond and Conway will also play an early evening show at Flatbread Wednesday, which will of course be a bit more mellow than the Saturday show. $10.

Food for thought
Wednesday (Feb. 4), 5 & 7:30pm, Castle Theater, MACC
The fact that more people appear to be paying attention to what they eat, where it comes from and the environmental impact of the purchases they make is kind of a double-edged sword. On one hand, it appears to reflect a conscious evolution, the collective realization of our limited resources and the grave harm that results from valuing profit over our basic need fulfillment. On the other, more douchely hand, given humanity's track record, this shift may be borne of selfish motives; the desire of some for profit and of others to appear "with it." Yet when a mass of people begins to embrace sensible bandwagons like the sustainable food movement, out of blind conformity or otherwise, perhaps it's best not to look a gift horse in the mouth. This week's Candlelight Cinema flick is a documentary called Food Fight that shows the origins of the sustainable food movement (okay, so it's California chefs) that has so sweepingly impacted the way we read food labels and how much we have to fricking pay just to feel good about what we put on the table. $12.

Thanks Steve for the heads up about Gomega opening for the Ozomatli concert today! You know how it goes in this business! We've been blowing it up on Twitter, Myspace & Facebook about the Ozomatli show and I know for a fact that we have some staff members MTW on either Twitter and Facebook but like always it's all good cuz I know the answer to this would be the promoter us the info so thats what we printed! Nothing we can do about it! What's done is done! Yet almost every show Gomega and Kanoa of Gomega dose we always have Maui Time Weekly on our fliers because they have always supported us and in return we support them but WHATEVER! This is the year I guess Gomega and Kanoa of Gomega isn't taking SHIT from anyone!

This show was fricken AWESOME tonight! Not cuz Gomega was the opening band but for all the people that were there you know what I mean! Every time they come to Maui it is one of the BEST CONCERTS every!

For the people who didn't go you missed out becuz it was the most high energy show I've seen with crowd participation and Chalie 2na it was CRAZY AWESOME!

What I don't understand is great bands like OZOMATLI come to Maui but Maui people just don't show up to see it cuz they don't hear it on the local radio station or their not educated about great music! And to each it's own but it's crazy that only Reggae and old Rock bands get love from Maui! So sad! So so SAD! It breaks my heart!

    Ipo has a good point
    January 31, 2009 | 08:26 AM

Ipo talking about how people didn't show up for Ozo...

They are an awesome band. It's sad that many people are attracted to bands because of how famous they are. This is a battle many bands have to deal with. Talent and showmanship unfortunately don't mean as much as having a video on MTV or TMZ. There is hope tho....The festival scene is where its at. Thousands of people show up for these gigs with dozens of bands, mostly unknown, for the vibe. For now, the record companies, MTV etc. are not interested because most of those bands are indie or self sufficient and can't make their corporation money.

Bands these days would be wise to steer clear of that 'record contract' dream and get out and make it for yourself. There was a time in the late 60's when many artists were feeling that same way. Radio was saturated with bubble-gum pop and then Woodstock happened, the first real festival show. The event was so huge that the corporations couldn't resist the numbers. To paraphrase Neil Young, "They flew over in their helicopters, looked down and said, Wow! Look at that market" Someday soon one of two things will happen... The festival/indie bands like Ozo will get their due, or as I hope, the record industry collapses upon its own greed and marketing practices. Major Label record companies think we're sheep-people and will just go out and spend money on who has the most press, and in some ways their right.

I personally encourage everyone to get hip to downloading music via torrents for free and say Fuck You to the industry. You are ripping off the companies way more than the artist. What the companies don't want you to know is that you can record music at home on your computer and sell in on CDBaby without a record deal and keep nearly all of the profits. A record company normally takes 50% off the top.

As long as the industry is going to dumb down the public with the Jonas Brothers, Britney, Maria Carey etc we shouldn't reward them by purchasing music from signed bands. You should however purchase music from indie and local bands, they are actually receiving the money.

Once the industry realizes they can't make selling CD's, the quality of popular music will improve. Imagine how many lame bands we wouldn't have to deal with if they couldn't make money off them unless they learned how to put on a good show.

I think it's safe to say Dave Matthews/Grateful Dead made more money touring than selling records. It's also safe to say that Lil'Wayne has made more money selling CD's than touring (does he even tour?). There's the problem, and the solution is to learn how to download music for free and put those crappy cookie cutter pop bands and their companies out of business and give the profits back those that put on a great show like Ozo.

    Your first guess was right

The real problem with Gomega/Kanoa of Gomega
    January 31, 2009 | 04:54 PM

It has been the understanding of many people, on the island of Maui and the surrounding islands, that Kanoa is one of the best musicians on the islands. He is in the same breath as Uncle Willie K, NuffSedd and by far better than Paula Fuga and she has a huge following. So, what's wrong with Kanoa/Gomega? He writes great music, plays a number of instruments incredibly well, has a great stage personality and on top of that is a really great person. So, what's wrong with Kanoa/Gomega? Its that shadow in the background of every show, the member of the band that has way to much say, yet no talent, the person that causes members of the band that are awesome to call it quits, its that person that books them at the same venue over and over and over again until the venue has no more customers and they can no longer afford to pay bands what they are worth due to over saturation, but yet will still book Kanoa for little to no money at all and for so many many other reasons... Everybody all at once say it with me. IPO KAHELE is that reason!!! Booking one person for shows on Maui and getting the lowest amount of what they offer any band is not being a manager. He is as good as they come and is being destroyed one day at a time.

Kanoa needs to do his thing and move on from the rut and drama. He's far too talented and does not need management to book gigs at local bars. I hope she's not getting paid for bringing bad vibes to the shows. From reading these blogs it seems she truly works hard for Kanoa, yet hard work is less valuable than effective work as a manager or whatever she is.

Kanoa is one of the highlights in the Maui music scene. Wish him the best.

First of all to Gomega and Kanoa Fan I would agree with you to some point but understand I'm not the one who plays for little or nothing at all! So point your fingers at me all you like I can take it! I am a bi@#h and I bi@#h all the time. As for band members leaving educate your self before talking, I know of one band member that left Gomega becuz of me and he left the band twice and was becuz of girls each time of course it was my fault becuz I voiced my feelings about the situation so your point is. To MT Wow, oooh snap! Ipo you know people can say what they like about me and it may hurt but as a person I stand by what I do and what I say and don't hide behind fake names and when I have something to say I say it and stand by it you should try it sometime MT and Gomega and Kanoa Fan!

As for the work I do for Gomega and Kanoa I don't need to justify it to anyone even if your a fan cuz I know what I do and I don't get paid for it and if you want the job here's the # (808) 281-8192 but you already have it I'm sure!

my thoughts and comments are my own,
if you got a problem with it,
please come and find me to discuss alternative communication options...

    Aloha "Gomega and Kanoa Fan",

Mahalos for all your mis-informed and delusional babble.
I don't like to be misquoted or misunderstood,
so I decided to break down your comments for you.

If you are still lost and without a clue....
you can come to ANY of Gomega or Kanoas shows
and ask Kanoa to point me out.
I'd offer to pay your way in, but since the shows are
always so AFFORDABLE, I'm sure you can pay your own way
    many times over.
I'd also offer to buy you a drink,
but I don't want you under the influence
of any drugs or alcohol while I break you off
a piece of useful and informational enlightenment.

It has been the understanding of many people, on the island of Maui and the surrounding islands, that Kanoa is one of the best musicians on the islands.
    BLAH-BLAH-BLAH-BLAH-BLAH....

He is in the same breath as Uncle Willie K, NuffSedd and by far better than Paula Fuga and she has a huge following.
NO ONE IS BETTER THAN THE NEXT... THEY JUST DO WHAT THEY DO BEST....

    So, what's wrong with Kanoa/Gomega?
NOTHING IS WRONG AS FAR AS THE "REAL" FANS ARE CONCERNED...
BUT I'M SURE YOU HAVE TO SHARE SOME THOUGHTS ON YOUR OKOLE RASH.

He writes great music, plays a number of instruments incredibly well, has a great stage personality and on top of that is a really great person.
YOU SOUND LIKE YOU KNOW HIM SO WELL,
    ALMOST ON A PERSONAL LEVEL....

    So, what's wrong with Kanoa/Gomega?
ONCE AGAIN?? I'M DYING IN ANTICIPATION
FOR YOU TO SHARE EVERYTHING THAT YOU KNOW.....

Its that shadow in the background of every show,
OHH?? YOU MEAN THE ONE THAT ALLOWS THEM TO BE SUCCESSFUL
ON SO MANY UNSPOKEN LEVELS?? THE ONE THAT DOES ALL THE GROUNDWORK AND THE FOUNDATION OF THEIR PROFESSIONALISM
AND WELL RESPECTED WORK ETHICS? YUPS- I KNOW OF THAT SHADOW.

the member of the band that has way to much say,
REAL RECOGNIZES REAL SON!! OBVIOUSLY YOU DON'T LIKE
THE FACT THAT SOMEONE THAT ACTUALLY CARES ABOUT THE
BAND AND ITS MEMBERS HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS.

    yet no talent,
LAST TIME I CHECKED, YOU DON'T NEED TALENT TO SPEAK THE TRUTH
WHILE KEEPING DISRESPECTFULLY SELFISH PEOPLE IN CHECK!!

the person that causes members of the band that are awesome
    to call it quits,
DID SOMEONE CALL THAT "MEMBER" AWESOME
OR IS IT A SELF PROCLAIMED TITLE?
I ONLY KNOW OF ONE MEMBER THAT QUIT
AND THAT MEMBER IS FAR FROM AWESOME.....

IN FACT THAT MEMBER HAS ALOT OF DIRTY LAUNDRY IN THEIR CLOSET.
BUT MY FAM TAUGHT ME NOT TO WASH DIRTY LAUNDRY IN PUBLIC.
SO OUT OF RESPECT, I WON'T AIR IT OUT HERE FOR EVERYONE TO SEE!!

its that person that books them at the same venue over and over and over again until the venue has no more customers
IF IT AINT BROKE, DON'T ATTEMPT TO FIX IT!!
IPO AND KANOA WORK AS A TEAM,
HATING ON ONE, IS HATING ON BOTH...
    BETTA RECOGNIZE SON!!

and they can no longer afford to pay bands what they are worth
I KNOW PERSONALLY THAT IPO CHARGES ONE OF THE MOST REASONABLE
FEES IN THE LOCAL INDUSTRY. IF THE BAR CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY THE BAND(S),
THEN ITS AN ISSUE THAT RUNS DEEPER THAN THE ENTERTAINMENT IT BOOKS.
AS FOR WHAT GOMEGA AND KANOA OF GOMEGA IS WORTH?
IF THEY ACTUALLY CHARGED WHAT THEY ARE WORTH,
NO ONE WOULD BE ABLE TO AFFORD THEM.
HOW DO YOU PUT A PRICE ON PRICELESS??

    due to over saturation,
WHAT DO YOU REALLY KNOW ABOUT ANY SATURATION??

but yet will still book Kanoa for little to no money at all
    ITS CALLED LONGEVITY MY FRIEND...
    OHH SNAPS!!
I FORGOT YOU KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT HOW MUCH
    THEY'RE ACTUALLY WORTH.... RIGHT?

and for so many many other reasons...
SOUNDS LIKE THERE IS ONLY ONE REASON, NOT REASONS.
THAT REASON IS YOU'RE BITTER ABOUT SOMETHING.
IF YOU NEED A HUG, JUST LET ME KNOW....
OR IF YOU WANT A GOMEGA T-SHIRT OR STICKER INSTEAD,
I'M SURE IT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER AND
HELP YOU GET OVER YOURSELF AND YOUR WEAKSAUCE ATTITUDE!!

Everybody all at once say it with me.
...AND OF COURSE YOU WANT EVERYONE TO SAY IT WITH YOU,
BECAUSE YOU CAN'T SAY IT ON YOUR OWN AND IN PERSON TO HER FACE.
    FUCKIN' COWARD!!

    IPO KAHELE is that reason!!!
YES, SHE IS THE REASON THAT THEY HAVE HAD THE SUCCESS AND LONGEVITY
IN THEIR CAREERS. MEMBERS HAVE COME AND GONE, BUT THE FOUNDATION HAS ALWAYS REMAINED THE SAME....IPO HAS KEPT THEM GROUNDED AND FOCUSED.

BUT ON A SIDE NOTE ITS LIKE A CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER COACH IN ANY SPORT. ALL THEY CAN DO IS PREPARE THEM FOR THEIR DATE WITH DESTINY.... ONCE THE GAME STARTS....
ITS ON THE PLAYERS TO CARRY OUT THE GAME PLAN.

Booking one person for shows on Maui and getting the lowest amount of what they offer any band is not being a manager.
UNLESS YOU OWN AND OPERATE A BOOKING/MGMT AGENCY
OR HAVE THE EXPERIENCE ON MAUI AND IN HAWAII
    TO BACK YOUR STATEMENTS....
I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU START TO SIP FROM THIS TALL GLASS
OF....... SHUT THE FUCK UP WEAKSAUCE!!

He is as good as they come
I AGREE HE IS GOOD, BUT COULD ALSO BE A WHOLE LOT BETTER.
AND I ALREADY TOLD HIM AND REMIND HIM EVERY TIME I SEE HIM,
    IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING.....

and is being destroyed one day at a time.
THE ONLY THING THAT IS DESTROYING HIM
IS THAT HE LOVES ALL THE PEOPLE THAT COME INTO HIS LIFE
AND WANTS TO KOKUA THEM TO SEE THEM SUCCEED AT
    WHAT THEY ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT.
THE REAL PROBLEM IS THAT NOT ALL THE PEOPLE
SHARE HIS DESIRE AND VISION, AS WELL AS IPO'S.

SO THEY SET THEMSELVES UP TO FALL SHORT
    AND HE TAKES THAT PERSONALLY,
EVEN THOUGH HE HAS NO CONTROL OVER IT.

HE NEEDS TO LET PEOPLE WALK THEIR OWN PATHS
AND NOT HOLD HIMSELF HOSTAGE FOR THEIR OWN ACTIONS....

NO MATTER HOW TALENTED OR GIFTED THE PEOPLE WHO ENTER HIS LIFE,
ANYTHING IN EXCESS IS UNHEALTHY AND DEADLY.

    Gomega and Kanoa Fan
IF YOU REALLY WERE A FAN, YOU WOULD SHOW SOME ALOHA AND RESPECT
TO THE ENTIRE TEAM THAT MAKES THEM SUCCESSFUL.
BY ISOLATING IPO AND ATTACKING HER THROUGH YOUR WORDS,
YOU ESSENTIALLY ARE TALKING SMACK ABOUT THE ENTIRE BAND.

YOU ARE ENTITLED TO YOUR OPINION,
BUT YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO DISRESPECT ANYONE AT ANY TIME.

I DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE, BUT WOULD LOVE TO MEET YOU.
MY OFFER STILL STANDS.... ANY OF HIS SHOWS, ANYTIME.

    BE BLESSED...

    February 02, 2009 | 07:34 AM

After reading the "The real problem with Gomega/Kanoa of Gomega" rant from Gomega and Kanoa Fan I thought I'd also help break it down for you.

My suspicions are that you quite a novice in the music industry. Take my opinions as being from one who has a distribution deal with a Major Label not from Hawaii and has toured/played all over the Mainland and Hawaii.

For starters, having a following in Hawaii is nice, however Hawaii has made is so easy for any band to get press, get on the radio/tv and get a gig. Count your blessings that you live here. For instance, if you believe having regular airplay in Hawaii and a video on OC16 means your band is 'awesome', you are mightily jaded. I for one love the music on local radio here but do also laugh at the quality. Most videos and songs I hear from local bands in Hawaii make me laugh so loud at the poor production quality, immature if not just plain silly lyrics and predictable chord changes. Trust me, you take a band like you mentioned, Nuff Sedd to the mainland they will be laughed off stage, never get radio play and possibly get the shit kicked out of them for sucking so bad. To the rest of the world they and other bands from these islands sound like childish-nursery-rhyme reggae music for 8 yr olds.

You see, that's the crux of the issue. Being big in Hawaii is not that hard to accomplish. The standards have been set so low because the commercial publicity and airplay are given to 'local favorites'. There are many great bands on this island Maui that will never get airplay on Pacific Radio Group or OC16 cause they don't fit the model, can out perform and will destroy the dreams of the 'local celebrities'.

I suspect you are one of those artists who's big dream is to be on OC16 so people will recognize and adore you locally. Many of my associates in the Real Music Industry often ask about the music from Hawaii and I play it for them. "Wow, that was stunningly awful" is the response I usually get. And that is the 'hit songs' from mine and your favorite bands.

There are a few exceptions to the rule. One of them is Kanoa, he is something the rest of the world can really get into, not just the Green Bottle Crowd that was watching YOU (Gomega and Kanoa Fan) sing on Hot Hawaiian Nights.

From what I know of Kanoa, his goals are far greater than OC16.

Maybe that's why all the haters about the way his business is run.

Now get back to working on your own material and please for god's sake, use something other than that tired Triton patch skank pattern I hear in damn near every song and maybe if you really care, use some real horns too.

So this is exactly what happens in your typical abuse case, weather it be physical or emotional. What is entirly comical is how WEAKSAUCE responds with explaining how Kanoa is not really that good, and needs to be reminded of that constantly.I AGREE HE IS GOOD, BUT COULD ALSO BE A WHOLE LOT BETTER.

I guess what will happen is what always happens here in hawaii, people get complacent, feel this is all you can truly acheive and except their worthless fate. But as THE CAUSE brought out, which I totally agree with, Kanoa is different and deserves better, and after 8 or more years of playing here would be a lot further along in the business without Ipo being involved is all. And that is a FACT son! I do love how the CAUSE assumes I am some reggae artist or the like because I think Ipo is bad for business or that Kanoa should be getting more radio play than NuffSedd. Here's the thing, Ipo is probably a really great person or otherwise Kanoa wouldn't have her in his life. She is probably really busy with what she does. Does that mean that things should never change because you people don't get it. If you play at a club or venue more than once a month, let alone 2 to 3 times a week, it is a proven fact that eventually people have seen you and decide to go somewhere else, regardless if you're Willie K or Jack Johnson or whoever. Over saturation is over saturation. But whatever, it is what it is and probably always will be. Good Luck Kanoa, even though you don't need luck just a change. The American people were stuck in a bad situation, but they voted for CHANGE, and I guess that's all I wanted to do is Vote for CHANGE. But it looks like 4 more years of this.

    Abuse?
    February 02, 2009 | 06:13 PM

Where exactly is the evidence of abuse? You can't just call the response delusional garbage and have it stick with no evidence. Just because you're told the truth doesn't mean someone is trying to abuse you. Maybe it feels that way cause you can't handle it.

How can you quote "...wating patiently" and not even know what it says. Please show everyone here where they said that Kanoa is not really that good? In fact he said that Kanoa is "GOOD" but could be a whole lot better. WHERE DOES IT SAYS HE'S NOT THAT GOOD? Everyone could get better. Ask any musician, if they tell you that they are perfect they're damned liars. Also I'd really like to hear your theory on how getting rid of Ipo will make people broaden what they know about music and realize that there are better musicians than what's OVERSATURATED on local radio.

Also I don't understand going to bat for the "awesome" musician that called it quits. If being in Gomega was so bad, and he's that awesome, wouldn't leaving be for the better? I'm sure he appreciates it but shouldn't he be busy being awesome with someone else, or by himself without the past problems of Gomega?

ONLY KANOA CAN DECIDE HOW BIG A SLICE THAT HE WANTS...

I guess what will happen is what always happens here in hawaii, people get complacent, feel this is all you can truly acheive and except their worthless fate.
TO EACH HIS/HER OWN... SO HOW WORTHY ARE YOU??

But as THE CAUSE brought out, which I totally agree with, Kanoa is different and deserves better,
EVERYONE DESERVES BETTER... BUT HE CHOOSES TO BE HUMBLE AND ALLOW THOSE AROUND HIM TO REAP THE BENEFITS. PUTTING HIMSELF AND IPO LAST ON THE FOOD CHAIN.... CAUSE IN THE END THE CONSUMER CAN AFFORD TO HEAR HIM LIVE AND DIRECT

and after 8 or more years of playing here would be a lot further along in the business without Ipo being involved is all.
I BEG TO DIFFER, UNLESS YOU HAVE SOME MGMT SECRETS TO SHARE SO WE CAN ALL BE AT YOUR LEVEL OF AWESOME SUCCESS!!

And that is a FACT son!
FACTS CAN BE MANIPULATED TO SUPPORT THE OPINION.
    THE TRUTH HOWEVER IS ABSOLUTE!!
IT CANNOT BE MANIPULATED, DISTORTED, TWISTED OR ABUSED.....
SHUT THE FUCK UP, SIT DOWN, LISTEN AND LEARN SOMETHING....SON!!

I do love how the CAUSE assumes I am some reggae artist or the like because I think Ipo is bad for business
THE ONLY THING BAD FOR BUSINESS IS WEAKSAUCE SO-CALLED FANS LIKE YOU.

or that Kanoa should be getting more radio play than NuffSedd.
RADIO PLAY IS ALL POLI-TRICKS!! GOTTA PAY TO PLAY.....

Here's the thing, Ipo is probably a really great person or otherwise Kanoa wouldn't have her in his life.
THATS KINDA PERSONAL DON'T YOU THINK??

She is probably really busy with what she does.
YOU SHOULD KNOW, SINCE YOU HAVE ALL THE FACTS.....SON!!

Does that mean that things should never change because you people don't get it.
WHAT WE GET IS THAT ITS NONE OF OUR KULEANA TO TELL THEM WHAT THEY SHOULD BE DOING WITH THEIR LIVES....UNLESS THEY ASK US!!

If you play at a club or venue more than once a month, let alone 2 to 3 times a week, it is a proven fact that eventually people have seen you and decide to go somewhere else
DID YOU GET YOUR INFO FROM WWW.USELESSINFORMATION.COM AGAIN?
COULDN'T BE CAUSE OF THE ECONOMY OR NEW VENUE OWNERSHIP....
    ITS CAUSE OF OVERSATURATION???

regardless if you're Willie K or Jack Johnson or whoever.
    Over saturation is over saturation.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR DELUSIONAL OBSERVATIONS CAPTAIN OBVIOUS!!

But whatever, it is what it is and probably always will be.
    NO IT ALWAYS WILL BE....NUN-YA!!

Good Luck Kanoa, even though you don't need luck just a change.
SO IF HE CHANGES BY GETTING RID OF IPO, HE WILL AUTOMATICALLY GET RADIO PLAY AND VIDEOS ON OC16?? ALONG WITH MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF MONEY?? HURRY UP KANOA DUMP IPO SO I CAN HAVE HER AS MY MANAGER
THEN I'LL DUMP HER TOO AND BE HYPER HAWAII HYPHY!!

The American people were stuck in a bad situation, but they voted for CHANGE, and I guess that's all I wanted to do is Vote for CHANGE.
IF YOU WANTED CHANGE YOU SHOULD BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION
    NOT ADD TO THE DRAMA....

But it looks like 4 more years of this.
LIKE I SAID FROM THE START... BUMBAI YOU LEARN!!

    Stand by your man!
    February 03, 2009 | 02:36 AM

Don't get it twisted. There's a big difference between being heartless and having all the heart in the world. Ipo stands by her man and ALWAYS is keeping his best interests in mind. Kanoa also has an amazing heart. Sometimes to a fault (i.e. playing shows at a discount.) Is it so wrong that he sees more than dollar signs when it comes to booking. Sometimes he just wants to play.
I think the problem is alot of people can't handle that Ipo keeps it more real than most any of us. Alot of people don't like seeing a strong woman that can hold her own. That's what I believe bothers so many people. She will never back down from what she believes in. She will always stand by her man, through thick and thin. I envy her for that. She works had as hell so don't knock her hustle.
Ipo, keep doing your damn thing. Grab a feather and get that dirt off your shoulder.
    I love you guys.

What Kanoa and Ipo have is between them and not bloggers
    February 03, 2009 | 03:54 AM

Kanoa and Ipo both have been great to the music community in Maui and to many people in Hawaii.

They work as a team and work hard.

If anyone has a problem with how they live or anything involving their personal relationship keep it private.

Bad mouthing them on a blog shows that you have no class. Get the f#*@ out of here.

First I'm thinkin', Ipo must be some controlling bee- otch, but after all these posts, there's more than a few with issues. KANOA, I would cut and run as soon as possible. I've seen you give heart and soul and that will get you farther than all these head trips will...

    "Abuse?" The Extended Directors Cut
    February 03, 2009 | 08:43 PM

I've been trying to post an extended version of my previous post since yesterday but it seems they're still reading it before putting it on. So I'll just post the big points.

Letting Ipo go won't change the mainstream to suddenly want to hear better stuff.

Last time I checked Ipo can't book where she wants, when she wants, that's up to the venue. Over saturation, dwindling crowds, lost revenue, it’s all a venues problem, you don’t blame the act.

The CD was out, known engineer, known distrubutor, in the hands of DJ's across the state who don't even know Ipo. What happened? It wasn't the music cause the "Fan" agreed that it's good.

I wanna learn be an attractive self-taught songwriter that's thinks publicity means your 'awesome' (kinda like the Britney/Paris gang). I have read some press on you and not once have I heard anyone mention the quality of your music, lyrics or voice. They seem to fixate on your story, looks and family. Wow! Your really blowing up....

Are you suddenly more bitter because you can't make a living with your music with only 6 to 10 people showing up at the gigs you book?

You might wanna express things in a more appropriate manner. Better hope your gigs on Maui don't get canceled in March without your knowledge after you buy the next plane ticket.

I have a good idea who you are and think you're such a beginner. I am jealous in a way too, I can't use my looks to get ahead in life. Remember them telling you to change your hair color back for marketing reasons? You should think about that before you brag next time.

Grow up and stop worrying about your 'fame'

If it's not you then why would you be reading and responding to this?

    Whaaaa haaapened?
    February 04, 2009 | 05:14 PM

What an odd thread. I look at the picks of the week and see a nice article about an Ozomatli show, White Rose, etc... Then there is a comment about others who performed at said show. A comment about how awesome the show was. So far all is normal. And then, seemingly out of nowhere, BAM! A pretty vicious personal attack on Ipo of Gomega.

What an odd way to try to get through to someone, slamming them online anonymously with a post that was in no way related to the discussion.
Constructive criticism is great, and necessary if you truly want to help some succeed. Any intelligent person should realize that putting someone down in such an open forum and offering no solutions would not be an effective catalyst in causing change.

Now I am assuming the "haters" are intelligent. That tells me that your only intent in posting was to intentionally hurt someone (Ipo). That's just rude.
I hope Ipo can see through this obvious attempt to cause pain and just shrug it off.

I also hope that Kanoa will be more successful this year than last. And even more so the next year than this. As it should be constantly improving and progressing.
As an entertainer who tries to pay the bills doing what he loves to do, I can say have regular work trumps all.
So to Kanoa keep gigging. Keep making music. Keep growing. Your fans will support you.
