February 12, 2009
Much like the holiday itself, one of the symbols most often associated with Valentine's Day has little to do with its source inspiration. We're speaking of course about the heart, which gets dolled up every February and made into balloons and chocolate, placed in the arms of stuffed animals and slapped on the front of greeting cards. Lost in the cuteness is what that ubiquitous icon represents: the slimy, multi-chambered flesh pump whose incessant pulsing keeps you alive. If you want to peek at a lifelike human heart without tearing open someone's chest cavity, check out the Web site of the Chamberlain Group, a company that manufactures incredibly realistic cardiothoracic equipment for medical use. There's even cool/creepy videos of their products (like the Beating Heart in Thorax) in action. You'll never look at those little candies the same way again. -JS         Find it at… www.thecgroup.com
