People ask a lot of dumb questions, ones like "Do you know any Jewel songs?" and "Why don't you want to have kids?" One of the dumbest is, "you're vegan? What do you eat?" As if nutrition was only available in the event of another sentient being. Anyway, it's gotten beating-over-the-head obvious that the way we have gone about rendering stuff edible on a mass scale is horribly ineffective on many levels. This includes the way livestock, grains and other foods are processed. Vegetarian Society of Hawaii founder/director and avid skydiver William Harris, M.D. is out to set things straight. His presentation, "In Search of an Optimal Diet," is an exploration of the points in agricultural history that essentially had detrimental effects on human nutrition. Harris is formerly an emergency room physician and director of the Kaiser Permanente Vegetarian Lifestyle Clinic. His book, The Scientific Basis of Vegetarianism is available online at www.vegsource.com/harris.
