July 23, 2009 Talkin' story Saturday (July 25), 1pm, MCC One of the most crucial elements of identity is the narrative. Individuals and cultures alike rely on stories to reinforce who they are and why they do what they do. Just look at Republicans. One of the things that made them so successful in the first half of the decade was the fact that they had an impossibly simple narrative about who we are and why we fight (all crap, of course)... I mean, can you name a country song that doesn't tell a story ("Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" notwithstanding)? In one form or another, stories also serve as a primary source of recreation. This weekend's Talk Story Conference will feature workshops with storytellers from all walks. George Kaimiola will offer a compelling discussion of Lahaina's history. Australian Annie Eyers will discuss her journey across Australia with Aboriginal guides. Wajuppa Tossa will discuss the revival of Thai folk tales. At 7pm the event will culminate with a "concert" featuring the conference's keynote speakers. $25.
