The Throwdowns at Queen Kaahumanu Center and the Gap

PICKS1
August 20, 2009
Malls to the wall

Thursday (Aug. 20), The Gap, Shops at Wailea, 7pm, Free

Friday (Aug. 21), Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center, Kahului, 7pm, Free

Celebrating 40 years doing what they do, The Gap is hosting "Born to Play"—the nation's largest simultaneous concert—with 700 bands playing at 700 stores. Who's The Gap's pick to rock/represent Maui in all the festivities? The Throwdowns, naturally. Plus, their single "Kihei Town" will be listed on The Gap's event Web site. Not bad.  Opposite The Gap in the mall brand spectrum (sort of) is Hot Topic, which will host "Local Static." The Throwdowns will take Center Stage at "Queen K," as lead vocalist Erin Smith calls it, in yet another free gig—the last opportunity to see the band before their big, must-attend CD release shindig next week at Mulligan's on the Blue. Once released, Hot Topic will carry the new CD statewide. Not bad either.

These guys are such a good band. They tear it UP onstage. Love their single "Kihei Town". Singer wails.

The Throwups are playing a gig for a CD release party then what? Back to the same old dive bars to play their mundane sounding music. Obviously for this band to hit and tour the mainland would be too much for them, due to them getting drowned out by better acts. Nope, they would soon rather stay here and be a lounge band for the bars of Hawaii. Another thing, just because you open for marquee bands, don't mean you're any better than what you are. Plenty of shitty acts have opened for bigger bands than the bands that come through here.Seen these guys open for a few acts and can honestly say they are very very rough.Kahala wails, this Erin Smith gal makes our ears bleed from the horrible melodies she tries.Aloha.

    Wow Kahala really?
    August 25, 2009 | 10:00 PM

Whenever I hear the "I'm not on drugs anymore" cracked out wailings of Kahala I get shrinkage. She's got talent yes, but I could do without the drama and unsexy raspy stage presence. The Throwdowns are gunna suprise a lot of the haters on these islands. Show them some respect for their hard work and bitchen sounding EP.

I think we could agree that Kahala and a few others have worked the dope culture well.I'm well aware of her drug stints, still dont change the fact that she can sing better than Erin Smith.I find it funny that you think the Throwups will surprise many haters....doubtful.Erin Smith is here because she couldn't cut it anywhere else.I think it's great that you guys are friends with the Throwups,it further explains a biased opinion of her music. No artists can survive with just their friends buying their works, which is the case here.No big deal,it's Maui and I think we all know we have a true lack of music here unless you dig roots and Bob.The hilarity of all this is,all these Maui acts are just simply lounge singers that play happy hours and malls.Yep,the big time.

    Crazy Talkin' Asshole
    August 29, 2009 | 06:37 PM

You are entitled to an opinion, dearest Asshole.

So fuck off and let the rest of the island enjoy The Throwdowns because we do.

Erin just went to Montreal and recorded with folks who worked on the Arcade Fire's album. And she has been writing really great songs this past year. That "On the Radio" song is killer. Erin also plays almost entirely original songs at her solo gigs. Super cool. You heard 'em?

Well, maybe not because you only want to hear Kahala. That's fine! Kahala's great! But at least Erin has played music in many other places in the world.

Whatever. To each their own. But do you really think your crap talk is so important that people want to hear it?

Excuse me. I'd like to go listen to my new copy of The Throwdowns album.

    As you were, Asshole.

Asshole, you are assuming whomever was enjoying The Throwdowns is friends with them.

You are guessing and grasping at straws.

    It's true.
If you saw The Throwdowns open for Candlebox you would have been in the minority not to have been hugely impressed.

Plus, I really don't think The Throwdowns think they are big news because they've opened for a few bands. They know the deal. They are just working to get their music heard. And it's worth hearing.

The Candlebox singer said that The Throwdowns are among the top few bands who have ever opened for them.

Let The Throwdowns have their fun and let the rest of us enjoy it.

Go hang out with Kahala. Who, by the way, does happy hours too.

Dissing a solo artist for playing happy hours, then saying no band can survive with just their friends buying the music?

    You're just confused and bitchy.

It's nice that there is such a lively forum for the blossoming musical talent on Maui. There may not be much money in being a musician here, but the love of music is what's important anyway.

Every artist knows that in order to make a living as a singer, songwriter, musical talent, then they have to play everywhere and anywhere they can. Happy hours, opening for other bands, doing tours, maybe getting some radio airtime, etc.

I think that's the point KM makes.

As far as who is better, Kahala or the Throwdowns? That may be irrelevant. The music is there to be enjoyed. The artists aren't putting it out there because they love to be slammed with criticism. They are putting it on the line, doing what makes their hearts sing, and because it rocks their soul.
