September 17, 2009 Any punk/ska fan worth their mosh pit grit knows of the Voodoo Glow Skulls. Formed in the late '80s, had this Riverside, California band been a baby, it'd now be old enough to drink. That kind of longevity has made them an institution in the genre, garnering them fans two or three generations deep. In an interview with MTW, Frank Casillas (lead vocalist and managing band member) says, "[T]he fact that three of us are brothers helps a lot. We're a family group, and that helps us persevere through a lot of drama that most bands don't get past." Casillas also helped put to bed the specifics of the band's name origin, as I'd found some conflicting accounts. Casillas: "[A]ctually taken from a toy necklace you used to buy in novelty shops at Disneyland…a friend off ours had a 'Voodoo Glow Skull' hanging from his review mirror." Fans of the band also know they've got some heavy Spanish influence, as evidenced in "El Cu Cui," Casillas' pick for most popular song. "I think that the energy of the song just grabs people and makes them want to dance crazy." Wanna dance crazy too? Casillas closes with a shout out to fans ready to party, saying, "Come ready to let loose and have a good time." 1819 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei. 808-891-2414.
