September 24, 2009 After a too-long hiatus, Maui Slam is back and "goes back to school"—the theme for this month's installment. (The flier's graphic alludes to the sexy schoolgirl—or boy—twist.) This event is open to all "spoken word artists, poets and MCs," the call more specifically extending, in keeping with the theme, to "all art freaks, band geeks, computer nerds, jocks, preps, plastics, stoners and loners!" If your stereotype or clique of choice appears to be omitted in that poetic line, I'm sure you're more than welcome too (I guess that means you, emos). Heck, they're even encouraging voyeurs to attend, specifically for the "fun and flirty" dance event to follow, with beats spun in a "special mix" by DJ Joey and The Wrench. Beyond dancing, the debut fashion show by Maui Community College's Fashion Couture Club, the "visual alchemy" of Douglas DeBoer, and the thrill of performing your original works before a receptive crowd (just keep your performance time to under 3 min.), is the chance event participants have at scoring the $100 cash (let me repeat, cash) prize. 1188 Makawao Ave., Makawao. www.mauislam.com
