October 15, 2009 "The true purpose of our music is to awaken a longing in the heart for that which is omnipresent: the experience of silence and mediation. It is not about entertainment—it is simply our spiritual practice," says guitarist Miten. Early in his career, he opened for the likes of Fleetwood Mac (with my wooden balls buddy, Mick), and (wish he was my buddy) Lou Reed. First meeting vocalist Deva Premal in India, at the ashram of the mystic Osho (controversial, Osho has criticized orthodox Indian religion as being full of antiquated ritual), the pair has lived and toured together since 1991, selling half a million albums internationally. Premal, a classically trained musician, has performed privately for the Dalai Lama himself, His Holiness calling her work "beautiful music." Joining the duo is special guest Manose—a darling Himalayan flautist, from Boudha, Nepal—a village nestled along an ancient route that stretches from the Himalayan mountain range into the Kathmandu valley. Friday night is not a concert, but an "Enchantment Evening," with "devotional singing" and "ecstatic voice celebration," while Saturday's all-day activities include the aforementioned, plus a show. 875-8820, globalmediaproductions.com.
