October 15, 2009 Robert Louis Stevenson famously inked these lines, part of a poem to Princess Ka'iulani, before she departed from her Hawaiian homeland, off to private schooling abroad: "Light of heart and bright of face: The daughter of a double race… But our Scots island far away, Shall glitter with unwonted day, And cast for once their tempest by, To smile in Ka'iulani's eye." The life and loss of this beloved half-Scottish, half-Hawaiian royal enraptures the hearts and minds of all who learn her story, and the Isle of Maui Pipe Band will honor her memory with the 2nd Annual Princess Ka'iulani Festival, timed near her October 16 birthday. Keeping perfectly with the theme, HAPA will perform—special guests also include the Richard Ho'opi'i 'Ohana, and the Tropical Harps (naturally, too, the Isle of Maui Pipe Band). Manu Boyd will lecture on the princess's family history, and with hula specific to Ka'iulani and the royal family, Halau Hula Wehiwehi O Leilehua performs. Ka'iulani fashions will be presented with "History of the Holoku'u Fashion Show," and additionally, a number of games and contests will be featured. A few sound particularly intriguing: men's "Bonniest Knees" and ladies rolling pin and Wellie (boot) toss, along with the MPD and MFD battling it out with a hukihuki (tug-of-war) exhibition.
