Halloween

October 29, 2009
The Front Street street-issue is an unresolved bone of contention, but there's still plenty going on. Hell, why not make a West Side weekend of it, by starting off with the Final Friday Art Night? After a visit to the Maui Ocean Center for underwater pumpkin carving (Fri, 1pm; Sat, 11:30am), avoid the Pali mayhem by cruising to Lahaina from Ma'alaea with the Pacific Whale Foundation's "Spook-tacular Evening at Sea" (6, 6:30 or 7pm, $69.95/$59.95). Keiki will have police escorts with the Costume Parade in its 31st year, beginning at The Wharf and ending at Banyan Tree Park (3:30pm). Also at The Wharf, after being dreadfully dormant for several years, the Haunted House returns ($5 for keiki, 1-6pm/$8 for adults 6-10pm), alongside the 26th Annual Ghoulish Gala Karaoke Costume Contest with Aunty Toddy Lilikoi and the 7th installment of "Night of the Living Dread" (yep, Marty) upstairs at Cool Cat Café ($10, 10pm). The Hard Rock Café celebrates by continuing their PINKTOBER events and entertainment (Sat, $15, 9pm), a portion of the proceeds benefiting The Pacific Cancer Foundation. Plus, Passion at Timba puts the "o" in Halloween with beats by DJ Del Sol ($10/$15, 7pm). On the South Side, sip some absinthe at Ambrosia's Haunted House to the "electronic tracks of doom" by DJ CIA (no cover, 10pm). Gian Don's hosts a HalloQueen Bash ($10/$15, 9pm) and Oceans Beach Bar & Grill features entertainment by Gomega and DJ Emmit (9:30pm). Keep it tame for keiki and hang out with the perpetually costumed Feather Duster the Clown at the Piilani Village Shopping Center (3-6pm), though Diamonds gets dangerous with Seattle trio, Fiasco ($7/$10, 9pm), and Mulligans on the Blue hosts a bash with three-set lineup and costume contest. Countryside, Casanova's holds a costume contest and books Pio Marasco and Gretchen Rhodes ($20 presale, 10pm), or sink your teeth in at Jacques for their vampire-inspired late night.

As a Part Hawaiian myself, I can't see why we can let the keiki have their parade, yet not allow the adults to roam free given we're in a down economy.

I've said it once, and I say it again: Allow the Adults to Dress up, but enforce some decency rules. That means no Giant Penises, no Naked Furry Vagina women, no blow-up dolls, and especially no fat guys in speedo's with sexual slogans that died off back in the 70's.

    Decency is Dead

As a Part Hawaiian, I can't see any relevance between Halloween and Hawaiiana. We need to quit marrying topics that are complex/loaded enough on their own.

As fo' da keiki, lets do all we can to help 'em have their fun and hold no grudges. Adults should/can (and do) do whatever they want--even if the result takes a big doo doo on decency.

So, let the kids have their holiday and make the streets their safe domain. As for us fogies: let's suck it up and pick an establishment with inside revelry, so we can judge for ourselves the company we keep, as we suck down (bwah ha ha) our drinks.
