Girls' Night Out in Makawao Town

Nov. 20 (Friday), 5-8pm, Makawao Town

November 19, 2009
All girls deserve a night out. Especially with the upcoming holiday season, a girl's gotta take her joy wherever she can. Because in a few weeks, so many women will become slaves trapped in the kitchen and be forced to pretend to be happy about the accomplishments of all those other kids who aren't theirs. (Of course, since I'm single and childless, I'll just be pretending not to hear my relatives whisper about my eventual spinsterdom.) So, all the wahines of Maui are encouraged to get a jumpstart on their "holiday" shopping in Makawao Town, where shops will be staying open late. In addition, shops will be offering free wine tasting, grab bags and coupons. Ladies, go ahead and pamper yourselves. You deserve it. C'mon, wine tasting and shopping? It really couldn't be better, unless the words "chocolate" and "massage" were thrown into the mix.

"In a few weeks women will become slaves trapped in the kitchen and be forced to pretend to be happy about the accomplishments of all those other kids who aren't theirs."

    What??!

You're a writer. You should know better than to write in stereotypes. You're trying way too hard to be clever.

    "Go shopping, you deserve it."

    Gross.

Thanks for pointing that out. I felt terrible for writing that women were slaves in the kitchen only during the holidays. It sickened me to use that overused stereotype. What I wanted to write was that in developed countries two-thirds to three-quarters of domestic work is performed by women. Women do between 75 to 95% of all meal prep and cleanup. This work is, of course, unpaid and usually after having worked all day. But then, I would have been over my word count. But, I don't see what's so disgusting about implying that a woman should go ahead and spend some of her hard-earned money on herself.

Women do two-thirds of the world's work, recieve 10% of the world's income and own 1% of the means of production. Maybe that isn't slavery, but it isn't equality, either.
