Matson Navigation Feels Your Pain

While [insert company name] recognizes this is a difficult time economically… Always followed by news of a rate hike, usually wrapped in platitudes about maintaining quality and excellence.

Usage: "While Matson recognizes this is a difficult time economically, this rate adjustment is consistent with our longstanding philosophy of implementing modest, incremental increases as necessary to maintain the highest level of service to our customers."

- Matson Navigation official Dave Hoppes, quoted in a November 24 press release announcing the company will increase its "terminal handling charge" by $60 for eastbound cargo and $125 for westbound cargo, effective January 3

Wow. That's spooky how close this is to the soundbite from MECO along with last month's bill and their request for a 9.7% rate increase: "“We know that these are challenging times and understand that any increase is difficult for our customers,” said Maui Electric Company President Ed Reinhardt.  “We’ve made concerted efforts to contain costs and improve efficiency, but we must also make the investments to fulfill our repsonsibility to provide reliable service to our customers.”

    MECO reliable service? HAHAHA!

Ok, granted, we rarely have power outages here compared to in the past, but the quality of the power leaves a lot to be desired.

MECO's poor quality power if a large part of the reason all those expensive control boards in your appliances keep blowing out. You can protect against power surges, but you can't protect against power browns where the voltage drop below the acceptable 110V without an expensive Uninterruptable Power Supply. I usually read anywhere from 110 to 122V on home circuits on my job, but it only takes once to run that appliance when the voltage is too low. When the voltage drops below a certain point, the circuits still consume the same amount of power, which means they have to pull more electrical current, and thus stresses the wiring, components, and traces on PCBs and literally burns them up.

MECO's low quality power is costing consumers a LOT more money than their rate hikes. Especially when one control board costs on the order of $400 plus labor.

Why doesn't the government see the need to raise taxes to maintain it's workforce and productivity?
