This is such an awesome idea that I can't even make fun of it. Instead of cutting down a tree this Christmas or buying an imported one, you can decorate a live, potted and locally grown tree, courtesy of the Makawao-based Permaculture Group. And when the holidays are over, you can plant it! This is good because: a) you'll be helping the environment; b) you'll be giving native plants a chance to thrive; c) you'll be helping attract native birds; d) it'll help with Maui's watershed; and e) you won't have to spend all your time cleaning up pine needles. But seriously, this is an amazing idea. Choose between ohi'a lehua (endemic), kulu'i (endemic and endangered), and ha'o. Planting the Christmas tree?
    December 16, 2009 | 11:56 AM

I love the idea of buying locally grown, so I can do my miniscule part to ease the shipment of trees overseas. Which eases the use of oil and pollutants. However, to use the idea of planting a Christmas tree, seems odd. Wouldn't we end up with a forest in our backyards? I guess the right idea, would be to leave them in the pot, and use it over and over again, til it needs a bigger pot, and then eventually transplanting into the ground. Just something I thought about, while looking for an alternative myself.
