Man, the generation of carcinogens during the production of PVC and other petroleum-derived plastics is, like, so whack, huh? Besides, even if pine-scented car fresheners were used as ornaments, the entire annual stock at NAPA simply couldn't do the trick to capture that true wintry aroma. That's why you opted to go with an evergreen Christmas tree this year, despite the implications of monoculture and the impact of transportation. The trade-off is that it's renewable and you're planning on recycling it. The time for the latter has come, as that once-real tree is now real dead. Now through January 10, Recycle Maui County offers four ways to rid your living room of that browning thing shedding pesticide-ridden needles deep into your carpet. The easiest path down Christmas treeless lane is to call to make a reservation to have your tree removed from your curbside (place out for pickup by 5am on January 3). Your minimum donation of $10 (check only) benefits Maui Fundraisers Wailuku Softball Team. Otherwise, there are three do it yourself at locations receiving trees at various hours: Maui E.K.O. Central Maui Landfill, M/W/F, 6am-4pm and T/Th/Sa/Su, 7am-2:30pm; The Oluwalu Recycling Center, M/W/F, 9am-4pm, T/Th/Sa, 7am-2:30pm, Su, 9am–2pm; and Maui Earth Compost (opens January 4), M/W/F, 7:30am-4pm and Sa, 7:30am-12pm. Pickup reservations: 280-8547; info hotline: 270-7880
